I joined XC when I was a freshman after being talked into it by Justin Wright. The fact that my older brother and friends were doing it were other contributing factors. I went into the season with an inconsistent summer. After running a 22 at Stanley Park after being paced by Chris Copeland and Dave Olbrych, I stopped going to practice and my performances suffered. I hit a stride when the season began and Dom Groux and I were constantly finishing within seconds of each other. We came to a dead tie at PVIAC, both finishing with times of 21:48. I had a forgettable indoor track season in which I could only muster a 13:18 two mile, and a 5:57 mile. Outdoor track was favorite part of my freshmen year, and I felt the best shape of the entire year with Coach Rieker’s workouts. I worked my two mile down to 12:20, and my mile down to 5:26 in a single season. I also ran in the 4x8 at the divisional WMass meet in an unknown split. The Lace ‘Em Up for Lexi 5k I notched a 20:24, and I was looking forward toward a summer full of training.

Runner’s Knee derailed me that summer going into sophomore year, mostly due to improper footwear and overuse. By the time Jay’s Run rolled around in late August I was only at 23 minute 5k shape. Once XC practices began I got back into it pretty quickly. I started going with the Varsity on runs (Dom and I ended up going at our own pace), and soon enough I broke my old 5k PR on our course with a 21:11. The next week I worked it down to a 20:51. I soon found myself running faster times than I expected I was going to, and was even in contention for a WMass spot. Mike O Connor and I had a chance to run with the Varsity at PVIAC, but opted to run in the JV race to boost the standing there. I came in second for Agawam at the JV race, and sixth overall for Agawam with a PR time of 19:14. Indoor track was alright, my mile time slowed from my outdoor time, and my two mile only got faster by a few seconds. I somewhat carved a niche the final weeks in the 1000m and the 1200m in the DMR, but didn’t run the events well enough to get a clear taste for them. I ran a forgettable 4x8 split in the WMass tournament. Outdoor track was better than indoor track for me, and I focused almost exclusively in the two mile. I ran a two mile PR of 11:44 against a kid from Cathedral, and scored a few points for them when I came in second in the Two mile against Chicopee. Against Holyoke, I ran the mile in which the coach told me I ran a 5:16. Although giddy at the time, I was skeptical on whether it was truly correct. I still don’t know if this is my true mile time or not, but I did run a 5:23 mile after outdoor track ended after a week off so who really knows. I ran a 2:18-2:19 800m split at the D1 WMass which got me a spot for the 4x8 for WMass. We ran a 9:09, with my split being a 2:19.

Going into junior year, I finally managed to log a successful summer of mileage. It being around 195 miles before actual practices began. I’m in my peak XC shape of last year right now, after having run an 18:51 at Stanley Park (my average mile translates to a 19:14 on a 5k). I was happy with that time because my previous Stanley PR was a 20:11 which I ran two weeks earlier. I’m hoping to well this season, and kick some ass. I’m aiming for at least an 18:20 at PVIAC and won’t settle for anything slower. I’m pretty excited to see what exactly Agawam can do this year.

I joined the xc team in 2008 as a freshman. I came in with a strong summer of training, which resulted in me being better than the average agawam freshman. I also had freshman Ricky Schoolcraft right with me every race which motivated me more. At our third home meet, the freshmen Ricky Schoolcraft, Matt Settembro and I finished in 20:08 missing the freshman home course record by just 11 seconds.I had a pr of 19:28 at Pviac. I ran indoor track but didn't really have any memorable times. I was expecting to try out for baseball but I never ended up doing it, and i didn't do outdoor track for some reason which i really regret.

Sophomore year was a mess. I trained hard up to the first race, where I suffered a pulled muscle in my chest, which affected me for the most of the season, and when i finally got back into shape, I got sick at the end of the season. I was left with a 19:33 at Pviac as my best time. During indoor track I had a pr of 5:23. In outdoor my mile pr was 5:14. My 800 pr (4x800 race)was 2:14 or 2:15, never got the exact split. My pole vault pr was 8 feet 0 inches.

The summer before my junior year, i got really serious. I ran to and home from practice every day. I started off the season with a 19:33 at Home, followed by a surprising 18:47 the next week, also at Home. The season highlights were a 10th place 16:51 at duck races (2.95mi), a 17:35 at gateway (2.76mi, very tough course), and my first win at Belchertown with a 15:50 (2.6mi) Our last season meet was at Stanley park. I came in 1st for agawam and 7th overall with a 17:41, breaking my 5k PR by 51 seconds. A few days later i suffered a knee injury and took about 2 weeks off of running and missed Pviac. At western mass, I got 2nd for agawam with 18:26 which was much better than I expected considering i was still injured and missed the 2 previous weeks.

Senior year i came into the summer with injury after injury until the last week of July. I still managed a solid month of milage and i'm in better shape than i was at the end of last summer with a 17:42 for the stanley 3mile compared to 18:21 last year. I'm aiming for a 16:55 5k time. I'm expecting to have Mikie Andre, Ben Parzich and I to have Pr's in the 16's, and Ricky Schoolcraft, Kevin Urban, and possibly Mike O'connor in the 17's. This season is definetly something to look forward to.

My name is Mike DeFilippi. I graduated from Agawam High in 2003. I was the captain of the 2002 XC team. I started running my freshman year. In 8th grade I was the only person to show up for cross country sign ups. I didn’t even know what XC was until I spoke with Coach Dillon for the first time. I regret not training until the first day of school freshman year.

Freshman year I was better than the average freshman. I improved greatly throughout the season. Anthony Goodrow, the number one runner, was never beat by me. I came close a lot of times towards the end of the season. My best time on our course was 20:19. I played JV basketball and ran track. My best times in track were 11:12 in the 2 mile and 5:07 in the mile.

I made the huge freshman to sophomore jump big time. I remember I was lucky to be in the top 10 for meets frosh year. Now I was up winning or getting 2nd in every meet. I won 5 meets sophomore season. My best time at home was 18:23 against Minnechaug. I finished 28th in WMASS. I made All Wmass 2nd team and All League. I made Varsity basketball. I started off great in track. I had a huge win over Steven Weckstrom of Holyoke Catholic at home. My time was 10:40, which is decent on our track. I got intro triple jump and ended up messing up my season because of a back injury and a huge illness. I didn’t even come close to breaking 11 the rest of the season until PVIAC. I placed 3rd behind East Longmeadow’s Rowley and Corbett. At WMASS I didn't run well. I ran 10:33 and had one of the worst races in my Agawam track history.

Junior year I came off a decent summer of training. I placed well in the 4th of July 5K and ran a time of 17:14. I broke my home course record with the time of 17:49. I finished 13th in WMASS and qualified for the state meet. I ran Indoor Track instead of that basketball bs. I sucked at Indoor but long jumped 18’8” if that matters. In outdoor track my best times were 4:52 for the mile and 10:18 for the 2 mile.

This summer I am doing great so far. I ran 16:52 for 3 miles at Stanley Park. I had no competition and it was after a 6 mile run with Tierney and Roy. My best time last year was 17:30. I can’t wait to dominate in 2002! WHAT?

UPDATE (I finished 6th in WMASS XC 2002 and 8th at PVIAC. I made the all wmass first team finally. I also set the senior course record at 17:23 and also broke the overall course record. I placed 2nd in the mile at wmass in Indoors (4:50 mile). Outdoor track sucked. I got my PR mile down to 4:38 that was the only decent thing if there was any. I ran a year of XC under Jack Daniels at Suny Cortland. I sucked. I graduated from STCC and go to Umass.

My biggest regret is not running cross country my freshman year. Damnit, it was such a big mistake. I tried out for basketball my freshman year, but got cut. Mike DeFilippi talked to me right after I found out and had me run indoor track, so i did. It was very fun and I got into decent shape. I didn't really have any good times or anything but I learned a lot.

Outdoor track was much better. Practices got harder and my legs got stronger. My best mile time was 5:20, 2 mile around 11:50, and 800m was 2:25(5 seconds away from individuals). I still got to go to individuals and run on the 4x800 team, we came in third place. My favorite event was the mile. Next year I will be much better.

This summer has been great so far. I have been running a lot of miles and in the best shape of my life right now. I ran a 19:27 or something for the miles(fourth place), after running 12 miles that day. I am running in the baystate games, the mile and the 800m. I think I have a good shot at placing because I am still only 14(age group is 12-14). My goal for the cross country season is to pass Mike DeFillippi's sophomore year level. If I keep up what I am doing I will do that.

Freshman year was very disorganized. Our team had a poor season but I kept with it. I didn’t really have a strong season at all, in fact it sucked. There were no summer practices, perhaps that’s why it turned so hard. Oh well I never really had a good time, and ran my PR at Northampton. Then I tried out for basketball, which I really had no shot at making anyway. DeFil talked to me after and told me to run indoor track. I did and it was fun, except I never went to any meets (except 2). Outdoor track was the toughest of all 3, because there was a lot more conditioning and speed involved.

The next summer DeFil was in charge so things were very organized. He was the greatest captain imaginable and always supported all the younger runners. We trained hard all summer, every night, and I did my own little lifting program which helped. I ran much improved times compared to freshman year. We even ran Stanley Park races every Monday which were great. XC became so much more fun sophomore year. Matys and I even developed this great little rivalry towards the end of XC.

i started running cross country as a freshman becuase my dad ran it in high school and thought it would be a good idea if i did it. going into it i didnt train over the summer and that hurt me alot, i struggled with it, my first race was a complete disaster, i had the huge 31.25 against amherst but i stuck with it and eventually got my PR down to 23.36, and me and lane started having the huge battles ending with him outkicking me at PVIAC's. well anways i worked my ass of thruout indoor and outdoor and became better and that got in my head that maybe i could be a decent runner, so all summer i ran hard and with the help of defil and slats i started really becoming faster, the first meet of my sophmore year i ran a 19.59 at home against ludlow, but unfortunatly i injured my left foot during the next week and it ended up costing me most of the season.

once again i ran hard during my summer going into junior year, i ended up running twice a day for most of the summer and i think thats mostly why i got alot better. i had alot of good races including three races that were all 18.38 on two different courses. but then wmass came and i competly choaked, i wasnt used to the cold and the snow and as a result i got beat by almost everybody in all of wmass, i came in a worse spot then i did the year before. The sucking at wmass motivated me alot and i got about as good training in as you can get in indoor and i had a very great indoor season, i toyed at wmass with a 10.57 and came in 5th. going into outdoor i was pretty confident that i would do good, but various injuries and other problems limited my season and when i did race it was very incosistant, my best time was 11.17.

going into my last season of XC, i am excited and i think that the leadership of Jay and I can continue the success of the past 3 seasons.
