Fraternity Hazing Results in Two Expulsions

On the night of April 9-10, 2003 a young man was injured while pledging Omega Psi Phi Fraternity “Underground” in Cape Girardeau, MO.

An investigation into this incident revealed, six prospective candidates had been involved in an illegal pledge process since April 2, 2003. On April 9-10, 2003 six prospective candidates were asked to report to the apartment of Roman Smith of Iota Delta Delta Chapter dressed in white t-shirts, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes.

These individuals were hit numerous times with wooden paddles, punched, kicked, head-butted, had clothes ripped off, struck in the chest with a spatula, had hot sauce poured down their pants, and forced to eat soap. One individual was hit in the mouth with a closed fist resulting in his front left tooth being knocked out leaving the root in the gum.

A review of the incident by the Eighth District Representative Larry Burks revealed Roman Smith of Iota Delta Delta Chapter and Amil Spencer-Berry of Eta Sigma Chapter were in violation of the Fraternity’s: Constitution and Bylaws, Membership Selection Process, and the Fraternity’s Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Policy.

Roman Smith and Amil Spencer-Berry have been expelled from the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity under Chapter II, Article VI, Section 1, Subsection A, of the Fraternity’s Code of Conduct. Both Smith and Spencer-Berry will be required to compensate the Fraternity, District, Chapter, and entity or an individual for loss, damage or injury.
