Differences in both official and family records create ambiguity as to whether "Arthur" was his first or middle name. To the family, he was known as Arthur. He diligently kept a journal every day for the year 1876, when he was 18 years old, including accounts of his father's death and the Presidential election. He also describes succinctly his first meeting with Lucy Kneale, with whom he quickly fell in love. The Poole family passed down stories of this fiery marriage, including the way Lucy used to chase him into a closet and try to break down the door after he had locked it. He would taunt her by reminding her how his father built the door to last, so it couldn't be broken down. During the bitter divorce, the court transcript reveals that Lucy claimed Arthur physically abused her on at least one occasion. He also had spent a lot of time with his mother which made her feel isolated. According to Arthur's daughter Etta, he used to torment his second wife Anna by telling her Lucy was the only woman he ever really loved. Just the same, the marriage to Anna Amanda Poole produced a steady and stable family, while the son Arthur had with Lucy Kneale (he was known to our family as Uncle Bartlet) lived to be over 100 years old. In his old age, Arthur enjoyed going to the movies, which also became gossip among the Poole family, although there never were any known issues of the farm he ran being neglected. His daughter-in-law Flora remembers he would suffer blackouts toward the end of his life. Family photos show him with a large white mustache at the end of his life and a sense of humor in the way he enjoyed posing himself and the other people in photographs. The Wager Family Bible erroneously lists his day of death as 30 FEB 1932.
