Martin did not have a middle name, only the initial "J" with no period after it. According to the family story, he met his wife Flora while boating on Torch Lake when he hopped off the boat he was on and on to hers. He earned a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering at University of Michigan and worked as an engineer for Buick, especially during the 1930s. With the exception of his college years in Ann Arbor and his efforts during World War II (which involved working for the Government-owned plant in Melrose Park, Illinois, making Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines), he lived all his life on the Wager family farm in Waterford. His collection of pristine autos was burned down in a fire on the farm towards the end of his life.
