England was begining exploration the same year as the Dutch. In 1600, England granted a charter to the East India Company to establish some overseas trade. England's government granted the company a monopoly of trade with the "East Indies." Similar companies established trade with Africa and places in America, espesially Virgina.

The colonization of America remained almost completely unknow, however, because of the impending war with Spain. The first English colony, Roanoke Island, failed for unknown reasons and settlement was suspended until 1604, after they had made peace with Spain. During the 17th century, England established colonies in North America and the Carribean that became the foundations of the British Empire. In the West Indies, British set up sugar plantations, and in 1655 they conquered the Spanish colony of Jamaica, the first English colony to be taken by force. The English then Established a string of colonies along the eastern coast of North America.
