The Gravity is a band that is based in South Plainfield, New Jersey. They formed completely by accident on a stiflingly hot July 15, 1995, day, at a cruise in the backyard of one James Anthony Buchanan. It was a good cruise. Not many people showed up, and those who did were bored. At one point, Jay, along with Chris Murphy and Mike Puterbaugh, started jamming and playing some tunes (because they have, like, musical talent and stuff). Ben Deutsch, who was also there, picked up a mike and started making up some words (because frankly, that's all he can do; he has no other talent). Little did they know that they would actually sound GOOD together. So, they decided to make themselves a band, and they called themselves Gravity, because everything eventually goes inside.

They played one local gig as a spur-of-the-moment replacement, and never thought they'd ever play again. But they had so much fun, that they had no choice but to reunite when they all returned to town for Winter Break in December '95, following their first semesters of college. They wowed their audiences with a brand new repertoire, and established themselves as cool. They also found out that there were a couple of other bands out there with the name Gravity, so they just tacked a "The" onto the beginning of their name, thus making them, "The Gravity," because everything eventually goes inside.

They all went back to school for the spring semester, and then reunited again over summer vacation. This is when they actually established themselves as a "real" band, with real talent. They won over whole new crowds, established a true fan base, recorded a demo, and even played some real gigs at popular New Jersey clubs (including a headlining gig at the fabled Stone Pony).

The really funny thing about all of this is that they actually are pretty damn good. They have a wide variety of songs in their repertoire that appeal to fans of all ages and musical interests. Their songs are filled with something for everyone, from power ballads to cheesy pop songs, from serious love tunes to carefree happy stuff, and all points in between. And believe me, no one was more shocked about this realization than them.
