Inside Look: Surf Swimming
I have been asked to write about what Jayne Schober gets up to on her
weekends when she is not going to swimming carnivals with the rest of
her buddies at Dapto Swimming Club.
Jayne, as many of you would be aware, is a member of North Wollongong
Surf Club. She loves the surf and has been competing in Surf Carnivals
since she was 9 years old.
Surf Club has many similarities with swimming club but in many areas
it is entirely different. There are still the same wonderful people
who share that common bond with you, who strive to do their very best
and enjoy great trips away to various beaches up and down the East Coast
of Australia.
Jayne has been a member of the Illawarra Branch Team for the past two
years. She usually attends carnivals most Saturdays, and nearly all
are in Sydney or Sydney Northern Beaches, or Newcastle. This involves
a very early start and packing of the car by her support crew (Kurt
& Ros Schober). When we arrive at our destination we all hope that
we find a park not too far away from the beach because Jayne's board,
chairs, tent, bags, thermos, Ros's backpack (which contains everything
from blockout, needles and cotton, wax, spare lighters, raincoats, spare
goggles and binoculars, and many other assorted supplies) and the mighty
knitting bag (you don't ever know how long these carnivals are going
to go for). The weather can do anything, and often does, so you have
to be dedicated to want to be a surf competitor. The main thing that
probably makes surf and swimming different is the unpredictable nature
of the surf. The same person does not always win in surf races. There
is always that factor of the unknown, the surf itself. This is reason
it is so popular. We as a family enjoy the whole social and competitive
side of going and being part of surf.
On Australia Day long weekend Jayne competed at the Freshwater and Manly
Surf Carnivals, which attract many competitors from all over Australia.
In February, Jayne has the Branch Championship. This is where all the
Surf Clubs from the Illawarra Branch compete against each other. Then
off to the State Championships at Swansea Belmont, and then the Australian
Championships in Queensland in March. Jayne hopes to do even better
than last year when she was a State Finalist for the Surf Swim as well
as an Australian Finalist for the U/19 Board Relay and U/16 Surf Swim.
She has had some good results this season where she came 4th at the
Forster Iron Person Challenge and 5th at the Kracka Iron person Challenge,
and was a prize winner (you will have to ask her about her great prize).
Jayne also hopes to go to Florida in May with the North Wollongong Team
to compete in the World Surf Championships. All the team members are
busy trying to raise money to enable them to go and that is why Jayne
is hoping many of you will be able to come to the Basin to Beach Classic
on February 3rd.
As you can see, Surf Club keeps Jayne pretty busy through summer! She
also does patrols every month, and when she is able, water safety for
the nippers on a Sunday morning. Jayne also attends board practice 2-3
times a week (as well as swimming training). No wonder Jayne is wondering
how she will find the time to fit in going back to school!!! (Ros Schober)
