Illawarra Academy of Sport
Ellen Wooton attended a presentation night on the 15th of February honouring
Illawarra Academy scholarship holders and coaches. The Academy sponsors
athletes from the Illawarra area in a variety of sports including cricket,
touch football, cycling, golf, netball, rugby league, swimming, sailing,
hockey & rugby union. The Academy also supports Athletes with a

A Special Thank You
To all the parents who cheered Mathew on at the IRD time trial, a big
thank you. If not for all of your cheering and support for Mathew, he
may or may not have made his country time for breaststroke!

Inside Look: Open Water Swimming
When you arrive at the venue, you have to go and register for the race.
You receive a card to fill out and return with your entry fee, which
is usually about $20. You then receive a cap, which is either bright
green, yellow, orange or pink, depending on how far you are swimming.
The races range from 1 to 6 km, and marathon swims from 10 to 25 km.
You also receive a number which is printed on the top of your right
arm and on both sides of your back.
Before the race begins the Officials talk to you about where you have
to swim and finish (marked with orange buoys), and answer any questions.
You have 5 minutes to be at the starting line usually about 25 metres
from the shore. The beginning of the race is very hectic. When the hooter
goes off everyone is kicking and shoving to get to the front of the
pack. And let me tell you if you go under, there isn't much chance of
you coming back up for a while!
After you have passed the first buoy everyone is spread out and it is
much more relaxed
When you go around a buoy you must go around it on the left-hand side.
When you pass each buoy your number is marked off. If you are sick or
injured you have to raise one hand and the rescue boat will come and
get you. You must then go and report to the judge's table.
The finishing line is normally marked with a steel square shaped pole,
which you have to swim through, or sometimes you may have to run about
5 metres to the finishing line and call out your number.
Everyone receives a certificate with time and place on it. First, second
and third in the male and female age divisions receive a prize; also
the overall male and female winners.
So that is open water swimming. I would encourage anyone young or old
who feels like a challenge to give it a go! It's lots of fun and a great
experience!

Inside Look: Masters Swimming
Master swimmers are swimmers over 25 years of age, with 5-year age groups
going as high as possible.
On the 9th of February, Narelle Day and Lynn Healey competed at Masters
in the Shoalhaven Aussie Masters Carnival. Congratulations to Narelle
who gained 4 first places in the 400m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 200m
breaststroke and 100m freestyle! Lynn finished with a 3rd 400m freestyle
(PB), 4th 50 backstroke, 1st 200 breaststroke, and 3rd 50 breaststroke.
They both swam in the mixed relay (over 200 years) and finished 2nd.
(2 men & 2 women whose ages added together total more than 200 years!)
Relays start at 120 years and are in 40-year age groups up to 320 years.
The oldest swimmers at this carnival were over 80! They dive and swim
ok, but sometimes need a hand to get on the blocks!

*16 - 18 March - 27th Australian Nationals (incorporating the NSW Short
Course Championships): SAC
*22 March - 4 April - 9th FINA World Masters Swimming, Christchurch,
