FROM
THE PRESIDENT
Our swimmers have been busy in the past month, competing at the NSW
Winter Country Championships held at Canberra, and a number of swimmers
representing the South Coast teams in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne.
Congratulations to our Country swimmers, as they all swam well, achieving
personal best times, medals to Kaine and Anita, finalist placing to
Ellen and Michael. We also had Michael Meurer, Ellen Wooton and Corinne
Glass travel to Melbourne on the weekend as part of the SC&T squad,
again with pleasing results. Ellen returned home with 8 medals, Michael
a silver medal and Corinne swam four personal best times. Well done
guys! The Club also wishes Kaine Love, Michael Wells, Anita Sernig and
Ellen Wooton luck when they compete at the NSW Winter State Open Championships
this weekend at the Warringah Aquatic Centre.
There is a General Meeting being held at the Dapto Clubroom on the 5th
of September. One of the main reasons for this meeting is for the club
to decide on the members' fees for the 2000/01 season, which will commence
from the 1st of October 2000. All members are encouraged to attend.
If anyone has something which they would like to see added to the agenda,
please notify our club secretary, Sandra Neall, phone: 42618423.

POOL
SIDE
Dapto swimmers performed fantastically at the pool during the Country
Championships held from the 7th - 9th of July, with most swimmers achieving
PB's throughout the meet! Highlights included Briarna and Leisha Southwell's
events (both ladies took a whooping amount off their entry times to
qualify for State Age in August), Clinton Parsons' 100m breast also
qualified him for State Age, Anita's 100m free gained her a silver medal
and Kaine Love performed to his usual standard gaining many medals for
his events. The parents enjoyed themselves too! Our 2000 NSW Winter
Country Representatives who competed in July: Briarna Southwell, Leisha
Southwell, Ellen Wooton, Jayne Schober, Clinton Parsons, Nathan Mitchell,
Anita Sernig, Michael Wells & Kaine Love.
FROM THE RACE SECRETARY:
Aquadot Under 12 Carnival: 18 Swimmers attended this carnival
on the 25th of June. 3 medals were won: Zac Ioannou (50 breast), Ben
Carrick (50 fly) and Briarna Southwell (50 back). Other competitors
swimming well on the day were Ashley Robinson, Perry Dalley & Daniel
Robinson. Congratulations to all.
SCAT Level 2 Carnival, Tuggeranong: 2 swimmers from Dapto attended
this carnival on the 23rd of July: Leisha & Briarna Southwell. Both
girls swam well.
Good
luck to all of our swimmers competing this month in the following meets:
August 5-6 NSW Open S/C Championships:
Warringah
August 13 Wollongong Winter Meet: Beaton Park
August 26-27 NSW State Age S/C Championships: Warringah
GOSSIP GALORE
A great social time was had by all at the Country Swimming Championships
in Canberra recently. The accommodation at Pinnacle Apartments in Kingston
was great (thanks to Ros Schober for booking it for us). When Toni and
the swimmers headed to the
pool for a light training session on Friday afternoon, we headed to
the shops to stock up on the food and drinks.
Around dinnertime
on Friday evening when Michael Wells and Clinton had not arrived home
from the pool, a call on my mobile to Michael's mobile to see where
they were was made. I was informed by Clint: "we don't know where we
are - we're lost!" After realising they were headed in the wrong direction,
I handed the mobile to Keith to try and direct them home (what a task)!
After finally getting through to them that they needed to turn around
and head back the other way, and to look for Parliament House, and Keith
telling them to stay in the left lane …" do not go in the right lane
or you will end up at Parliament House"… you guessed it - they went
to Parliament House! Eventually, after much frustration and a very long
mobile phone call (I can tell you I am not looking forward to the mobile
account), they finally burst in the door (with naturally, a typical
story from these two clowns).
After dinner
with the Southwells at the Club, we went back to their apartment for
drinks. Ingrid, Norbert and Sandi arrived, with a few more drinks and
Ingrid's great jokes we had a good night. Saturday evening pre dinner
drinks at the Schobers, Ros put on a great spread, then off to the "Holy
Grail" for dinner. Dinner was very nice, but don't order steak there
because it almost walks off the plate it is so rare. The newest member
of the club, Campbell Alexander Fulcher, slept through the entire evening
and was the perfect little gentleman.
After dinner,
while the great calculations went on to work out the bill, Ros decided
to show us what she carries in her handbag. I can tell you, if you ever
need anything Ros will have it in her handbag, and if you ever need
a lighter (we counted 19) see Ros. After the walk back to the apartments,
back to the Schobers for more drinks and nibbles, we heard more of Ingrid's
great jokes and Ros' funny stories.
It really
was a most enjoyable weekend, and of course, the swimmers all swam well
too. I read a story on Canberra in the Sun Herald a couple of weeks
ago and you will be interested to know that "The Holy Grail" is apparently
the "in Place" to go in Canberra, so I guess we were part of the "in
Crowd". Thanks for a good weekend. LYN PARSONS
