Club presentation nightPRESENTATION NIGHT 2001

A warm welcome to all our swimmers, their parents and friends to our annual presentation night. A special welcome to Kerrie Love, representing our sponsors, the ANZ Bank. Unfortunately a few of our invited guests are unable to attend tonight because of other commitments but we do have apologies from the Member for Illawarra, Marianne Saliba, the Lord Mayor, Councillor George Harrison, and our local Ward Councillors, Vicki King and Mark Yates. Also our Pool Super and Patron Arthur Bristoe cannot officially attend but will be with us in spirit. We thank all our invited guests for the help and sponsorship they have given us over the past 12 months.

On the note of sponsorship, it is always difficult to gain sponsorship no matter what club you are and how determined the members are. Again, this year we were fortunate to receive major sponsorship from the ANZ Bank and from Dapto Leagues Club and we thank them very much for their support. Also, some of our hard working committee managed to get some wonderful prizes for our Trivia Night from local businesses and both parties should be congratulated on a great effort.

It has been a mixed season for us in swimming. Club Points Score nights have been well attended, despite the early season bad weather. It is always pleasing to see new faces around the pool, especially those parents who don’t mind helping out with a watch or running cards. Club Championships have just finished with many events keenly contested. These saw a total of 11 new records set, with outstanding efforts by Letteisha Bensley and Eliza Vesey setting 4 and 2 new records respectively.

Competitive swimmers have not been as successful as in recent years but with the retirement of many of our older swimmers and the Club going through a rebuilding phase this was to be expected. It was great to see many new faces making our Country squad and all our squad members acquitted themselves extremely well with many personal best times. Congratulations to Anita Sernig and Ellen Wooton for qualifying for nationals. Ellen has done extremely well this year and has been named our Swimmer of the Year, while Anita has won the Gudgeon trophy for gaining the Club most points at the South Coast Championships.

The Club has been active as usual on the social scene with our annual trip to Durras, the recent Trivia night and several get togethers during the year. These are always fun events and are a great opportunity to meet new friends with a common interest. Don’t be shy in joining in next season.

The pool heating is well on track. Work is scheduled to commence at the end of this season and Council have given a
commitment to complete work on heating of the 50m pool by October 2001. This is fantastic news - no more freezing cold water in October and November!!

A huge congratulations to our Club person of the Year – Tara Dyer. This is the first time since its inception that this award has gone to a non-committee person. This says heaps for the huge effort Tara has put into the Club this year. Beside training and competing herself, Tara has found time to do many other things around the Club that often go unnoticed. These include helping out on points Score nights, guiding younger, inexperienced swimmers learn the ropes at carnivals, assisting her mother with the huge requirements of Social Secretary, and spending many a Sunday morning at the Dapto markets raising money for the Club.
To top all that Tara is a regular instructor at our free Learn to Swim classes and showed her commitment to that this year by gaining her Austswim certificate. All this while coping with school and the many new and different brothers and sisters arriving at home at different times throughout the year. Well done and many thanks to Tara on a super effort.

Congratulations to all our swimmers who are taking home trophies tonight and we hope to see you all back next October.
