------------------------------------------------------------------------
On August 11, 2002 you had written to the
Dragon list with heartfelt condolences and gave
your support in our time of sadness when it appeared that Tamori
Cheiko was to be Tainted.
Now it appears that the Fates play cruel games
with our lives as the Taint that was to have
been Cheiko's has been placed on Daidoji Megumi instead. As a
low ranking samurai I
cannot speak for my Daimyo but can give you my personal gratitude
and support for having
cared for others outside your clan.
Remember that Lady Doji helped bring civilization
to Rokugan, the system that strived to
benefit the entire empire. Not all can be strong or fortunate,
as many events are outside
mortal effort or control. One of the virtues of the Crane that
has been emphasized is the pursuit
of excellence. On a small scale this often offers the illusion
of being true. Practice with spells,
kihos, katanas, crafts and politics enables one to excel when
compared to others. Sometimes
the Fates intervene and all our efforts seem to be for naught.
You say, where is the fairness
in that?
One of the characteristics of being mortal
is the striving for a better future, sometimes even
changing it. Success would not be as sweet without the possibility
of failure. Civilization allows
a place for those who would honor the Emperor's laws, regardless
of ability. People less skilled
or blessed are allowed another chance to better their lives.
Does hard work guarantee success?
Certainly not. But without striving, there would be no hope for
the future. Can the future be
known? Perhaps. The best that one hopes for is a brief glimpse
into the future. No one can tell
the future with clarity with the possible exception of Togashi.
Only he could bear the weight of
knowing the time and the place of his own demise.
Where does that leave the Crane and the rest
of Rokugan? As mortals, we work, we toil, we strive.
If the Fates intervene, so be it. Know that for every failure,
every disappointment, there opens an
opportunity to achieve a better life. You are Crane, it is in
your nature to strive for excellence.
Go forth and work for a better tomorrow. Let you innate grace
and beauty show the rest of Rokugan
that adversity can be faced and overcome eloquently.
As for us Dragons, we still have our own turmoil.
Fighting the Phoenix, Lion and Dark Oracle
may bring about our demise but not to fight leaves it a foregone
conclusion. Thank you for caring
about us and know that your efforts are appreciated.
