Notes:
King of England 1272-1307.
He won influence and fame suppressing the baronial revolt (1263-5) against his
father, Henry III, and crusading (1270-72). Succeeding his father (1272), he
carried out important administrative, judicial, and financial reforms, which
increased royal power and weakened feudalism. By summoning frequent
parliaments and including commoners in them, he contributed greatly to
Parliament's development. Edward conquered Wales and incorporated it into
England (1275-95). Although he also conquered Scotland in 1296, the remainder
of his reign was occupied with Scottish revolts. [Random House Encyc.]
King of France 1108-1137.
Working to build the power of the crown over independent local nobles, he
notably increased the importance of the royal courts. With Abbot Suger of St.
Denis as his advisor, he worked closely with the church. He began a war (1104)
against King Henry I of England, duke of Normandy, a struggle that was to
continue intermittently for centuries. Before his death he arranged the
marriage of his son, Louis VII, and Eleanor, daughter of teh duke of Aquitaine.

King of France.
He enlarged his kingdom and fought repeatedly with the kings of England,
William I and II, who as dukes of Normandy were technically his vassals. For
his illegal marriages to Bertrada de Montfort (both were already married), he
was excommunicated by Pope Urban II, but restored on the understanding (openly
disregarded) that he have no further converse with her. [Random house Encyc.]
