King of England 1216-1272.
He succeeded his father as King when still a minor. His favoritism to
foreigners led to resentment among his barons, who revolted against him and
refused to finance his overseas campaigns. Forced to make substantial
constitutional concessions by the so-called "Mad Parliament" (1258), he
enlisted French and papal aid but the barons, under Simon de Montfort, defeated
him at Lewes (1264). His son Edward's victory at Evesham (1265) enabled him to
retain executive power while granting many reforms.

King of England, 1154-1189.
He inherited the Angevin lands, obtained Aquitaine by marrying Eleanor (1152),
and succeeded to the throne (1154). He reformed the judicial, monetary, and
military systems, but his attempt to bring church courts under secular control
through the Constitutions of Carendon (1164) failed. By the Treaty of
Montmirail (1169), Henry secured France's sanction for his sons' succession to
his territories and Prince Henry was crowned heir (1170). After the murder of
Thomas a Becket (1170), Henry's life was beset by trouble with the Roman
Catholic Church, revolts in Ireland and Normandy, and strife with his own sons.
