The following is from ["Garner-Keene Families of Northern Neck Virginia", by Ruth Ritchie and Sudie Rucker Wood", 1952, pg. 210-2]:
"Matthew Keene was perhaps the youngest child of Thomas and Mary Keene and was probably born after their arrival in Virginia about 1650 since no record has been found of a claim of headright for him. He moved to Stafford County. His mother left him in her will one-half of 870 acres of land at Yeocomico in Westmoreland County. The other half was to go to her friend, Thomas Daniell. All this land apparently went to Matthew eventually as it seems to be the land which he deeded to his nephews, John and Henry Garner. (West D. & W. B. 3 p. 397). In 1705 George Eskridge of Westmoreland County was given power of attorney by Matthew Keene of Stafford County (West D. & W. B. 3, p. 398). Matthew Keene died in 1731. His will (Staff W. B. 1729-48, p. 26) dated July 21, 1723 and probated 14 Apr 1731, reads as follows:"

Named: Wife Bridgett (gets land and "negro boy" Matt), daughter Elizabeth Withers and her husband James Withers (land where she lives, plus everything after the death of wife Bridgett), granddaughter Elizabeth Field, grandson John Withers, Elizabeth Emett (relationship not given). Executrix: wife Bridgett. Wit: James Severs, John Edge. Co-dicil: 25 Feb 1730, Bridgett's estate to go to Elizabeth Wither's eldest son Jno Withers after Bridgett's death.
Unsolved question: Who was the grandson John Withers?
----- 21 Dec 1705: "Mathew Keene of Stafford County made a deed of gift which read in part as follows: 'For natural affection and kind love that I bear my well beloved sister Susan Garner of Westmoreland County .. unto John and Henry Garner of the said county one tract of land in Westmoreland containing 875 acres bounding upon the back line of John Shepherd which was patented in 1661. That is to say, 475 acres of the above to the said John Garner and 400 acres to Henry Garner my kinsmen.' Witnesses were James Withers and Thomas Garner. !Marriage(Intention): In Orrington Town Records Marriage Intention Book B, p.76, entry #116, reads: "Orrington June 14th 1855. This day Mr. Joseph B. Read of Bucksport and Miss Hannah A. Bartlett of Orrington entered their Intention of Marriage in the Records of the town of Orrington. Attest Simeon Fowler, Town Clerk."
!Birth place: In family bible, listed as Bucksport, Maine. However, on the birth certificate of Grace B. Reed, found in the Orrington Town Records, he reports his birthplace as Orrington. His birth record was not found in the Orrington town records. (The same holds for Maria A. Bartlett).
!Tombstone: A large ten foot tall marble monument is shared by several members of his wife's family. One side reads: "Capt. Joseph B. Reed, Born March 11, 1831. Lost at Sea, Feb 24, 1884." On another side the monument reads: "Capt. Joseph B. Reed 1831-1884, Maria A. Bartlett, his wife, 1837-1905, Grace Reed Goss, 1869-1950".

!Birthdate: In Reed family bible, her birthdate appears as 22 Jan 1838. In the Orrington town records, under the family listing for Joseph B. Reed's family, her birthdate appears as July 22, 1838. In the Orrington town records, her birth certificate appears as "Hannah A. Bartlett, b. 22 Jan. 1837". A letter by Mrs. Irvin Noyes Gould (her granddaughter) to a Miss Baker was also found in the Orrington town records, and also identifies her birth record to be the one of "Hannah A", but that in all later records she went by "Maria A.". That record identifies her middle name as "Antoinette". Her sister Joanna E. appears to have gone by "Hannah E." in later records.
