The following is from papers that Jens and Ellen Mortensen obtained from Danish authorities before their emigration to America. Translation by Hannah and Marie Mortensen. Original was in possession of Ray Mortensen of Hubbard, Oregon, as of 1982:
"Jens Mortensen, son of that time Bolsmand (or Botsmand) and Kotter weaver, Morten Mortensen and wife, Johanna Marie Jorgensdattter, was born at 'Afjmyds Mans' in Afjmyds County, Northern District the 9 September 1851, eighteen hundred and fifty one, and was baptized November 30 that same year. Which I hereby testify with Afjmyds district church book, according to law. Confirmed in Middlefart, January 29, 1866 Mselbye District Minister"

Omme Church the 25 'twenty-fifth' May same year which I hereby testify on behalf of government. S. Omme Church the 14 October 1889 Ekshyssey District Minister"

Wife = Elizabeth who is age 70 and living. He was not a veteran and had no SS#. Usual Occupation = Watchman at a Saw Mill. Burial on 5/20/40 in Silverton. Father: Preston Haines b. Illinois. Mother: Amanda Rape b. Illinois. Cause of death: Arterioscleroses with Senility. Lived in Silverton Community for 30 years, and in State of Oregon for 49 years. !Census 1860: Sangamon Co., ILL. Appears age 4, M, b. ILL. However, ages shown for mother and sister Nancy suggest that it might have been enumerated in 1862. If enumerated in 1860, John's bdate would be c.1856. If enumerated in 1862, his bdate would be c1858, but other ages would then be consistent with known birthdates.

Mother was born in Illinois. Occupation = Farmer. In addition to family, one border was listed, named Bertha Dural, who was born Feb 1893, age 8. Children listed: Verna, dau b. Dec 1888, age 11, b. Illinois, Goldie,dau b. Jul 1890, age 9, b. Illinois, Gracie,dau b. Jul 1893, age 6, b. Oregon, Clara, dau b. Feb 1895, age 5, b. Oregon, & one border. Also, Lizzie, wife, b. Oct 1868, age 31, b. Illinois, father born in Germany, mother born in Illinois. Married for 13 years. Six children, four living.
-------------------- !Obituary: Silverton Appeal-Tribune, May 24, 1940, page 4: JOHN WESLEY HAINES John Wesley Haines was buried Monday afternoon in the Silverton cemetery, from Larson & Son Funeral Home. Rev. Frank Zook of the First Christian church, was the minister. Mr. Haines, 84, died early Saturday morning at his home on Jersey street. He was born Feb. 27, 1856, near Springfield, Ill., and had resided in Silverton for 30 years. Survivors are his widow, Elizabeth, five daughters, Mrs. Abe Kennedy and Mrs. William Bailey of Silverton, Mrs. Humbert of North Bend, Mrs. Frank Rappe of Hubbard, and Mrs. Gilbert Glover of Oregon City; ten grandchildren, two great grand-children, and one foster son.

Her bible, used in St. Louis Missouri in school in 1879 when she was 10 years old, is in possession of Lonnie Dale Chrisman. The bible is written in German, but some genealogical notes are written within in English.
!Death: Oregon Death Index: "Elizabeth A. Haines" Spouse=John, Place=Marion Co. The birthdate in the index appears to be a typo, says 1892. Viola confirmed that she died in 1961 or 1962 (confirmed in Nov 1994 over phone. Said she was 92 when she died, and 35 when Viola was born -- consistent with all known facts).
