When comparison with the known birthdates, the 1860 census appears to have been
taken between 27 Feb 1862 and 7 Apr 1862.
He might be the son of Samuel C. Haines and Malinda Pulliam of Allen Co., KY
(they m. 21 July 1824 in Allen Co. [IGI Bath 8504603], and Samuel b. 8 Nov 1797
[IGI Batch 0170630]). (Note: IGI Batch F512941 may have a lead on a possible
birth record if this theory is correct.)
A second theory (not entire consistent with his reported birthplace) is that
he was the son of the John W. Hains & Elizabeth Moore who m. in Jefferson Co.,
IL, on 16 Jan 1831. (Perhaps his son Wesley is named after his father?)
This Marriage Record is found in the Illinois State Marriage Index. Then there
is a marriage record (ibid) for a John W. Haines and Sarah G. Heart, 10 Nov
1857 in Sangamon Co., IL.
Preston Haines enlisted in 1861 for three years, in Co. B, 11th Missouri
Infantry. He died 14 Feb 1863 in the Military Hospital in Keokuk Iowa. His
widow remarried to W.T.Williams, had one children (Martin L.) and resides in
Cotton Hill, Twp. [Hist. Sangamon Co., Ill., pg. 594]

It is clear that he had a wife before Susanna Walker. The adult baptism of his
sons James and Gamaliel appear in the Truro church records, and we can place
their dates of birth to be at least 6 years before his marriage to Susanna, and
he appears at that later time in those records with wife Susanna.

[Freeman 1:374] reports that he was probably the son of Henry "starch-maker"
who came over with wife and children, including Joseph age 3, embarking on June
17, 1635. [Henry is RIN 11528] (Probably incorrect)
However, the genealogical dictionary of New England disagrees, and puts Joseph
of Lynn as the son of Henry of Lynn.
Another theory is that he was the son of John Collins (1603/4-1675) & Ann
Awdrye, from Stepney, London, Eng. who m. 1634 [IGI] & came to Salem MA in the
1640s. This theory is put forth in a query in [Cape Cod Gen. Soc Bulletin, Vol.
XIX(3) Sept 1993, p.63] by William G. Cooper, 102 Valley View Dr., Erwin TN
