After Thomas Wentworth of "Scrowbie Manor" died, then William Brewster Sr. took
over the tenancy of the historic Manor.
Sir Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Stafford, was a descendant (prob. grandchild or
great grandchild). He was a loyal servant of King Charles I, who had many
disagreements with Parliament. An attempt was made to impeach Sir Thomas,
but after he eloquently defended himself, those proceedings were dropped.
However, in order to appease Parliament (and trade for other agreements),
Charles I signed his death warrent, and he was beheaded. Again, note that this
is in reference to the descendant.

Info on him and his family is in Hills's "Planters" Vol. 2, pg 78.
He was enormously wealthy for the times, being called "Golden Thomas". He paid
Henry VIII a large fine to be excused from accepting the "Order of Bath", and
in 1528 obtained a license from the King to remain covered in the royal
presence. This cost him a small fortune, but it must have given him a lot of
personal satisfaction.
