Her birthplace (New York City) and her middle name are identified in the birth
record, Danbury town hall VRs Births 2:95, for son William Hawley Rice. That
same record (5 Aug 1885) shows him to be her 7th child, and all children are
living.

That she was the wife of John Holmes is inferred from her record of death in
[Mayf.Des. 16:235] as "Mrs. Sarah Holmes".
It is not known whether they married in Plymouth, or whether they immigrated
together. MacKenzie, "Colonial Families", gives a child Thomas born in
England, and if John Holmes is the John, son of Thomas Holmes of Colchester
whose will mentions grandson Thomas, son of John, then this would indicate that
a marriage in England is more likely.
John Holmes (ABT 1636-31 JUL 1697) m(1). Patience Faunce (ABT 1640-) on 20 NOV 1661 at Plymouth,Massachusetts, children: 1. John Holmes (22 MAR 1663- 7 SEP 1728), 2. Nathaniel Holmes (ABT 1643-25 JUL 1727) m. Mercy Faunce (10 APR 1651-11 FEB 1732) on 29 DEC 1667 at Plymouth,Massachusetts, children: 1. Elisha Holmes (19 APR 1670- 3 DEC 1753), 2. Elizabeth Holmes (25 APR 1686- 2 AUG 1701), 7. Eleazer Holmes (16 OCT 1688-).
Her identity as wife of Humphrey Johnson comes from a deed in [Shurtleff
12:200-202], whereby Humphrey Johnson of Scituate sells John Hewes Sr. of
Scituate 20 acres of land, and "Elnor Johnson wife of the aforsaid Humphrey
Johnson... did freely Resigne up her Right of the within mencioned house and
Land". The deed is dated 4 Sep 1650. (This does not prove her to be Humphrey's
only wife nor the wife of his children, but the date is just before the first
known child, so it is very likely that she was the mother of his children).
Her maiden name, Ellen Cheney, comes from [Savage 2:551]
Because Humphrey and his wife Abigail filed a deed on 20 Jul 1668 [MD
33:153-4], I conclude that his first wife Ellen must have deceased.
Her parentage is unknown by me, but the most likely candidate is William of
Roxbury, who [Savage 1:373] says had John (b.29 Sep 1639, d.soon), John again,
and prob. more; was freeman 1666, d. next yr on 30 June, aged 63. His wid.
Margaret m. ... Burge, and d. July 1686.
Margaret Johnson ( DEC 1659-ABT 1739) m. Josiah Leavitt ( 4 MAY 1653-14 SEP 1708) on 20 OCT 1676 at Hingham,Massachusetts, children: 1. Josiah Leavitt (28 JUL 1679-), 2. Joseph Leavitt (23 JUL 1681-), 3. Sarah Leavitt (-23 JAN 1726), 4. Margaret Leavitt (20 OCT 1683-), 5. Jeremiah Leavitt (21 AUG 1685-), 6. Joshua Leavitt ( 1 AUG 1687-), 7. David Leavitt (16 AUG 1691-), 8. Asaph Leavitt (31 JUL 1695-), 9. Hezekiah Leavitt (17 SEP 1697-), 10. Mary Leavitt ( 7 OCT 1699-).

Marriage Record [MD 14:39]: "Asa Beales to Rohoda Lathle Desember 8th 1720",

And in [MD 11:79]: "John Rouse of Little Compton alias of Marshfield & Anne
Lathley of Sd Marshfield were married, June ye 29th Anno 1720".
(Note that John and James are prime candidates for her father).
Records of the First Church in Marshfield, Mass., contain record: [August 17
1717]: "The same day Anna and Margaret Lethlys were baptised, daughters of
Philip leathly" [MD 31:122] <--- My guess is that this is her!
Note: Marcy Lathley, dau. Philip and Mary (Bishop) Lathley, m. 1722 in Truro
William Tilton. Note the Truro tie. If this is the same Philip as in the 1718
baptism record, then the 1718 baptism is almost certainly her. The widow
Mary above may be widow Mary (Bishop) Lathley. A little more research is still
needed, however. The Lathley surname seems to have died out before 1790, since
there are no Lathley's in Massachusetts in that year. It is extremely rare
before then as well, with the above records constituting the only such
occurances in the town records printed in the Mayflower Descendant. The
equating of Margaret Lathley who married John Lewis with Margaret the dau. of
Philip Lathley is as yet unproven, but after searching, I am starting to
become rather convinced.
