Website Credibility!

Based the work of B.J. Fogg and can be found at http://www.webcredibility.org/guidelines with additional information provided by WeeSaul World, plc. Got dat? Groovy...

1. Verify the accuracy of the information on your site. There is nothing worse than looking for information in cyberspace until to discover that the information you have found turns out to be incorrect. This is especially true when doing reports for work or school and your boss or teacher points out that one of your sources is incorrect and you end up looking like a damn fool. So, provide your visitors with the correct information they need and they will thank you for it or at least they won't send you nasty e-mails.

2. Show that there is a "real" organization behind your site. We here at WeeSaul World, plc stand behind our products 100%. An organization is only real as people perceive it to be and you must promote this reality. If your organization loses the faith of its visitors, you have become just another website in the vast wasteland of cyberspace.

3. Highlight the expertise in your organization and in the content and services you provide. If you do something well, tell the world. A shameless promotional gimmick: A good example of this is the fact that WS Design's strengths are HTML and making the page look pretty. That is what we do and that is what we emphasize in our promotional material.

4. Show honest and trustworthy people stand behind your site even if you have to fabricate them. Honesty is always the best policy and your website should reflect this. Don't be the next Enron or WorldCom. Show that you can really do something and not show the world that you are only good at juggling the figures. This was acceptable practice until recently but is no longer acceptable.

5. Make it easy to contact you. Yes, make it easy for people to send you hate mail if need be. The quickest and easiest way to accomplish this is through form mail. Yes, this may increase the volume of Spam you receive and yes, this may give an easy means for people who don't like something about you to tell you so but this is all necessary. Sometimes negative feedback is what is required to get you pointed in the right direction.

6. Make the site look professional. Or does it look like an AOL site constructed by a 12 year old? The first impression is always the most last and if your site doesn't look as if you mean business, you won't do any. (Shameless promotional gimmick: WS Design will give you the professional look you desire at reasonable rates. Visit us at https://www.angelfire.com/pa/anticrust/wsdesign/)

7. Make the site easy to use and useful. The useful bit is a bit subjective for one-person assumption is another's conclusion (the is a useful piece of knowledge give to you free of charge by WeeSaul World, plc). The easy to use part is a little more complex and requires constant testing and refining. Have you considered every possible thing that a new visitor will click? Have you any JavaScript redirects that keep your guests from using their back buttons and trapping them in an endless loop from you haven't provided a means of escape? Are your navigational controls easy to find at all times? There are thousands of questions that can be asked and should be asked during the development process and if answers to these questions reflect that your site is easy to use it just may be but there is always the possibility that someone will do an action that is completely unexpected. If you design your site following the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle many of the pitfalls of disenfranchised visitors can be avoided.8. Update often (or at least show that it has been reviewed recently). Change is good and if your repeat visitors find new material on your site with every visit they will be much more likely to return or may spend more time browsing to see if other changes have been implemented or to see if maybe there are areas that they have overlooked on previous visits.

9. Use restraint with any promotional content (e.g. ads, offers). There is nothing worse than bombarding your visitors with endless pop-up ads especially those that when closed, open other windows. Make a visit to your site an enjoyable one.

10. Avoid making mistakes. Mistakes are bad, repeat the mantra; mistakes are bad. No one likes to neither have a page not load properly nor do they like seeing little boxes with X's all over a page. Bad code must never be placed upon the hallowed grounds of cyberspace. Test all materials extensively then upload.

These are easy ideas to follow and will make for a more enjoyable experience for your guests. You are the host and allow others into your world, act like a gracious one.
