Pension of Pvt. John W. Kling Company I , 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, also known by their nickname, “Birney’s Zouaves”. John was mustered into service on August 24th, 1861 at the Skuykill Arsenal in Philadelphia. On September 8th 1861, he moved with the Regiment to Washington D.C, where he was encamped just three miles north of the Capitol on “The Queen’s Farm” at Camp Graham . He was there with the Regiment during the cold winter months and in December of 1861; Typhoid Fever broke out within the Camp which resulted in the Death of Fifty-One men of the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteers. It was decided on March 12th 1862 to move the camp to higher ground in Bladensburg, Maryland to rid the epidemic and ready the Soldiers for campaign. The 23rd Pennsylvania moved to Bladensburg and were encamped at Camp Clark . He later re-enlisted with the 158th Pennsylvania Regiment and mustered into service at Chambersburg November 1, 1862 , as a private with Co. A, (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863. After the war he married Mary Ann lnu. and in 1890 lived in West Manheim Township, York County, where he died at age 87-1-18 from "nephritis chronic." Most of his post-war life was spent as a farmer selling produce to Market.

Pension of Adj. Thomas K. Boggs of the 23rd PA. He filed on June 17th 1880 as an invalid. We have yet to find this soldiers burial spot.
Pension of Pvt. Jacob Harp. It was filed by his father A. Harp on December 3rd 1866. We have yet to find this soldiers burial spot.

He enlisted into the 23rd Pennsylvania at the Schuylkill Arsenal in Philadelphia on April 21st 1891. On September 8th 1861, he moved with the Regiment to Washington D.C, where he was encamped just three miles north of the Capitol on “The Queen’s Farm” at Camp Graham . John filed for his veterans Pension on November 16th 1891, his attorney was his fellow soldier William J. Wray. He Died on May 31st, 1917. He was buried at Mt Moriah Cemetery on June 2nd 1917 in Section 135,Lot 2, Grave NW Corner. His wife filed for his Pension on June 7th 1917.

Pension of Pvt. William Schutretter of Company A. He filed for his pension as a invalid on July 8th 1890. Around 1875 he and his wife Ada moved from Philadelphia to Gettysburg. He died in 1919 and was buried at Gettysburg National Cemetery. His headstone is picture in the Virtual Cemetery section of our website. His wife Ada filed for his pension on June 8th 1920.
