In general the Cockatrice is a creature that had the lower body of a snake and the upper body of a rooster. It was a serpent that was born from a cock’s egg.
Although that is all there is about the Cockatrice, another theory is that it is a transmogrification of another mythical creature known as the the Basilisk.
The the Basilisk (or Cockatrice) is more common and described in more detail. It is known as the Mythical King of the serpents, it is a creature that is born from a spherical, yolkless egg, laid during the time of Sirius (the dog star), by a seven year old rooster and was then hatched by a toad.
