RINGWOOD PIPE BAND
The InterLink UK
Network
The band was formed in 1973 by 3 ex servicemen in the Ringwood,
Hampshire area of the UK. Iain Grant was the the piper who decided it was
possible to form the band and he placed an ad in the local paper. He also called
Jim Garrioch who he had bumped into at a piping engagement. Together with
another piper the band was formed! Others responded and as more pipers had
the Seaforth MacKenzie kilt this became the chosen tartan - as it is to this day.
A new and key member of the band was Ian Miller. His job took him across the UK
so he was the man given the task of locating cheap uniforms for the band!
He was very successful via military contacts. However, it took some time as
any kilt or doublet surplus to requirments was slit through to render it
worthless! What a waste - and a torment for Ian.
On 13 September 1997 I bumped into Jim Garrioch for the first time. He
related this story to me and I promised to contact him for some more.
Until the 1996 AGM Ian Miller was the proud President of the Band. Illness
forced him to resign the presidency but he is still in touch with the band.
Another excellent servant of the band Johnny Johnson took over as President and
John Morton another retired piper is vice president.John Morton still plays
an electronic set of pipes although is unable to turn out for the band.
Next year will be our silver jubilee so we are
hoping it is a super year. We have about 25 pipers and drummers and play at
grade 4 as the band is a fun band.
