SØREN'S BIRTHDAY PAGES

How we remember, celebrate, commemorate.

25 July, 2003 - Søren's Fourth Birthday

My post at MISS Memorial Board: 28 July 2003

Thank you all for your well wishes for Søren's birthday. We had a quiet day. Kieron took the day off from University and we went out for breakfast at the beach. The beach this time of year is beautiful in the morning - the light glistens and shimmers on the water from the sun's low angle, in winter mode. We took Søren's bear and Roku's bear to the playground that overlooks the sea.

What a place to play as a kid huh. Wow, the view! We got to be there all by ourselves until like clockwork, 9am rolls around and all the mums and bubs arrived. Sometimes the mums of the Eastern Suburbs just seem to 'have it all', the bubs, the beautiful prams (I really despise the three-wheelers because of the social climbing statement they make to me - no offence), property owners, high-income households, no worries - it seems that way looking at them. I'll never fit in to this picture.

We snapped a few photos of our bears and left, strolling back down to the beach. Kieron was very sad on the way home. We talked at length about living without our children.

The 25th was also Roku's due date - Søren tried, way back in October, to give himself a good 4th birthday present. ((((Søren)))))

I then went to get my haircut and coloured. I realized after I made the appointment, that this would be happening at the time of Søren's birth. Kieron decided to come along. At 10:51am, there we sat, Kieron reading an economics book (thrilling) and me looking at insidiously stupid women's mags (equally thrilling) as my colour set. It was silly and relaxing all the same.

After the cut, we stopped in to the jewellers and asked about getting a necklace made for Kieron. He has always wanted a necklace with a pendant of Søren's hand print. We just have never gotten up the courage to ask anyone about it before. I think we may do it, after talking to the jeweller. He seemed really keen and had some great ideas.

After lunch, we went up to the store to get ingredients for a cake. I noticed the Pavlova shells and thought, hey that looks good. So we got whipped cream and berries, went home and decorated the Pavlova. It turned out absolutely divine. So delicious! That was Søren's birthday cake.

I decided that I wanted to make cookies for Søren, as that would be something I would do if he was here. So we got out the ol recipe book and I picked out Snickerdoodles, gingies, and peanut butter. So far, only the snickerdoodles have been baked - I ran out of steam.

On Saturday, we took Søren's bear to the movies (Roku bear snuck along) to see "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind". Very interesting. I was kinda bummed because we found out too late that there was a Gregory Peck film festival on. We would have liked to have seen "To Kill a Mockingbird", one of my favourite films, on the big screen. It seems somehow, an appropriate film for the weekend.

Yesterday, we decided to participate in National Tree Day. So we went to one of the sites, a newish park called Sydney Park, and planted 27 small trees and shrubs in all our babies honour. It was a really nice way to spend Søren's memorial day - even Kieron said so, and he's not one to really say such things. I hope those trees grow into a lovely bushy area. We even got to take home free plants. I took several (sorry, I was greedy). I wanted to get some of the Kangaroo paw. I didn't know the names of the others. I intend to plant them in our front, even though we don't own this place, but it needs some work. It looks just terrible. So I figure, free plants - I will only have to pay for the wood chips and maybe some topsoil - will make a lovely display if the kids who wait for the bus would only NOT jump on them. We'll see.....uggg.

So that was our weekend. I am trying to get some sewing done this week. We are off to Melbourne next week and I'd like to get some stuff made before then.

Love you guys, thanks again. Without you, mention of Søren on his birthday would be few and far between.
