25 July, 2000 - Søren's First Birthday
We had just learned that we were pregnant with Imogen a few days before Søren's first birthday. And while this was a wonderful surprise, it was also difficult because it made us very worried at a time when we had wanted to exclusively celebrate Søren. We had experienced two subsequent pregnancies after Kae with Aurora and Søren, but this time we felt much more vulnerable. The intensity surprised me.
His first birthday was as hard as anyone could imagine. We celebrated quietly at home with lovely flowers, a beautiful cake and plenty of ice cream - but no little boy. It is so difficult to know how to mark this day - we feel both extremely proud of him but so very sad without him. Maybe some people think we shouldn't celebrate, but we don't see how we can't. Our dream is to always do something brand new on the birthdays of our children. A good friend of mine at MISS does this and I think it is such a great idea. So for Søren's first birthday, we bought him a star at the International Star Registry.
