The cold air raced against her face furiously as her raven locks glided upon the wind as a dove's wings . On she sped faster and faster to the horrific sounds that lay ahead. Inside her heart began to pound in her ears-growing loud enough to finally drown out everything around her. The screams grew silent, all that was left was the rush. Upon her golden mare she rode onward. Billowing smoke floated over head, flames destroying a peaceful village.
Finally, she was there, close enough to do what she excelled at. All it took was a short stop of her mount, and a flip in the air. Surrounded by thugs almost instantaneously, she worked. One after one of these hate mongers came--petty thieves, and time after time she ran them down to the ground. The men hurridly left town-knowing they were fighting a losing battle. She lost herself then. It always happened that way. After every battle, big or small, she felt the over exhuberant rush of victory. Her blue eyes glowed with voracious intensity. Then a strange look came over her features. Slowly her brow began to raise.
"What do you want Ares?"
A bright shatter of light and there he was. His black hair cropped neatly and a look of sheer pleasure on his handsome face. He rested a hand upon the hilt of his sword as he seductively swaggered up to her.
"Come now Xena" he grinned, "I thought you would be happy to see me." The words came forth so tauntingly.
Xena flashed back a sappy grin-one oozing with sarcastic undertones. "When have I EVER been happy to see you?" She knew it was vicious to say-but, at the same time she loved being cruel to him. After all she had been through-after all HE put her through-it was something she felt neccessary to do.
Ares frowned. He was indeed hurt at every quip and snide remark this woman made, but he dare not make it known to her. No, instead he grinned and returned the banter. "Xena there's been MANY occassion when I'd say---oh, by the shrill screams of -shall we say- *JOY*-- that you have been MORE than happy to see me." Perhaps I went a little far there.....he thought.
Xena started to twist her face into an unamused frame. It was an abnormally hot and tedious day. She was fatigued by the previous fight and was about to embark on a weeks journey to meet up with Gabrielle and her husband-The one she met in the last journey to Chin. One of the last things she had wanted to do was be part in another of Ares' tiresome games. I'll just be blunt about it...he can't expect me to even say a WORD to him after all the pain he's caused.
She clenched her teeth and spat out at him, " I really DO NOT have time for your stupid games-so, either tell me what you came here to say- OR LEAVE" With that she began to finally put her sword back in her scabbard, and crossed her arms. A stoic expression on her face.
Ares pondered a moment before he spoke. He knew what she thought about him. He had done many horrible things. At heart he wanted to change-to start anew. In the past it was only minor conflicts, but, as the years wore on- more atrocities came to pass. He honestly wondered if she could forgive him. He finally started to speak- but, retracted his breath and shook his head instead.
"WHAT?" Xena grew more and more impatient. Just WHY was he looking at her like that. Why couldn't he for once just be blunt about why he was bothering her yet AGAIN?
Ares stood full height, an expression of cockiness along with hurt crept upon his features. "You know what? NEVERMIND." With that, he was gone...the only reminder a shatter of sparkles that faded as they hit the ground.
The warrior princess just stood there a moment contemplating just what that could have been about. She couldn't deny that now she was curious. The heat started to overtake her though, so she shrugged off the thought, mounted Argo and raced off for the next lake.
*******************************************************
Back at his lair, Ares rampaged. He tore down tapestry after tapestry of battle depictions. Tossed vases and blasted his throne into nothing but scorched rock. Then it happened. The room began to grow dark, the noises of nature outside growing to a painfully unbearable volume. Down to his knees he fell. What have I done? WHY, why did I do the things I have done....
He sat there for what seemed eternity. Xena's return had sparked this need for change in him. When he heard the news that she had died-it nearly destroyed him. He now felt like he had a new chance to make this new way for himself. Her death had really made him think-he had spent the whole period from the news of her passing on- to hearing that she was back, held up in his dank dark room. What he felt disturbed him to no end....as he remembered how he spent that time..................
**Flashback**
He saw the image of her body in his mirror. Seeing this heartbreaking sight, he urgently felt he needed to be reminded of how it used to be- and focused the imagery on the past. Starting off from their first meeting, the first battle, to their first kiss, to their- first everything....
Oh how he relished that first glimpse of her. She was standing upon a tall hill, the breeze sifting through her long raven tresses. Her blue eyes flashed in the early sun's rays as she dictated to her friends and family- simple villagers- of how they would not stand to be bullied by the likes of a man named "Cortese". Unknown to her, he stood there, breathing deep the scent of her power as she stood upon that hill. Fear was present-not from her-but, from those she spoke to. Her beauty and charisma was unmatched by any he'd ever seen. So in awe was he, that he felt a great pain grow from his chest....
On he thought to that first kiss. It was after Xena had sacked a small town named-something or other- he never really remembered their names. That night in her tent he found her, asleep on her makeshift bed. Her hair strewn about the furs. He leaned down and kissed her sweet lips, and for a time he was sure she had kissed him back. For fear of waking her fully, he had crept back into a darkened corner and watched as she slept. No doubt images of her recent victory playing in her mind.
Then, the relationship was soon consummated....he remembered every detail. He had just returned from a foreign nation, a gift for his princess in hand. A shower of sparkles, and there she was. Almost in the same state as when he kissed her. He placed this gift in her open hands and a surge pulsated through it. A ring of light, warm and fuzzy - her eyes opened to this. Ares stood over her, and neither spoke a word. Their lips met with the deepest of longing, and both fell into pools of passion. Neither ceasing to feel every inch, taste every taste, and be smothered in each other's need for ....
Quickly his mind flipped. Image after image of hurt he caused her, all the times he wasn't there for her, the times he treated her as though she was nothing surged into his mind. Then something remarkable had happened-a tear gently fell from his masculine face.....it was too late......Xena-his princess, his chosen, was......gone....
Then the news came- he had another chance. Immediately he went off to find her- and what happened- Once again his greed for power side tracked him. The chakram of light became a priority. He resorted to his old tricks of trying to OWN what he desired. Back in Greece he even tried to get her back through her best friend. What have I done!? he yelled at himself. Pain and self-loathing became clear. Just what can I ever do???..............
**Discovery**
Now, now here he was. After trying to talk to her for the first time in what seemed eons....and she of course rejected him. Still he sat on the floor where his throne once was. He thought long and hard as to when the last time they shared the old feelings were-and then it came to him. When he was mortal. Was there something different about him in that state? Something more tolerable? Or did Xena just find pity for the powerless ex-lover?
Ares questioned all these things and came to a decision. He had to know if there was a side to him that didn't repulse her. At that moment, his emotions running rampant, Ares plunged his sword mercilessly into the rock where he had sat.
*****************************************************
Xena lazily floated along in the clear blue water. Argo happily grazing in the distance on green summer grass. The warrioress smiled to herself. She had saved a village, taken some relax time, and managed to hurt Ares' feelings all in the same day. Not only that- she was starting to feel whole again after her return to the living. She submerged herself in the cool depths of the lake and came up with a fish. After the long route she had been on, a grumble in her tummy had started that just would not cease. Upon opening her eyes- and realizing just how small her *catch* of the day was- she sighed and tossed it back. She had a few dinars to spare and decided to treat herself to a tavern dinner -complete with mead.
Slowly, she swam back to shore, dressed, and was ready to go. There was a strange feeling in the air. The air felt stale and thick whereas it was a crisp heat before. Xena shrugged it off as she did all petty thoughts and continued on to Corinth. It was the closest town and perhaps she could bump into some old friends.
*********************************************************
The sun was starting to go down as the impressive pair of horse and rider drew near to the outskirts of town. Xena found a place to board Argo for the night and upon doing so went to find her own means of nutrition and shelter.
Corinth always made her feel self-conscience. Her name was well known and had been held in fear for a long time ever since she attempted to crush the city back in the day. The appointment of Hercules' half brother Iphicles had changed that view some. Herc always talked fondly of the blue-eyed beauty, and slowly stories of her good humanitarian nature started to be more associated with her.
There it was.....the tavern....Finally, some good food and a nice soft bed, she thought. In she walked and took a seat at a corner table. The tavern had a musty odor to it, as well a lingering scent of sweat. A plump woman in all her ruffley dress glory, mosied up to Xena.
"Well, helllooooooooo there, don't you be lookin' the part of a soldier," the woman chirped.
Xena just stared blankly at this woman who- apparently didn't have a clue as to who she was talking to. "Well, helllloooo there to you too." she cooed back.
"So, what's your name missy? We here at the tavern, likes to keep a friendl-ee first name basis with tha regular types - I be Itonal", the woman beamed.
This was too much for Xena. Itonal?! No, that CAN'T be her name! HAHAHA she thought. Her exterior showed no hint of amusement though. She kept her face calm and collected. "Well, hello there .....Itonal.....I BE Xena."
Upon hearing her name, Itonal's face turned a ghastly white and her eyes grew wide. She had lived in Corinth all of her life-and now-here was the greatest threat to her home-Xena: Destroyer of Nations. Itonal's words crawled to get out of her mouth- to say what she felt, and finally-she could hold them back no longer. "YOU! YOU HORRIBLE WOMAN!! DESTROYER OF PURITY AND LOVE- HORRID SCUM! YOU are NOT welcome at this establishment-grab your things and GET OUT! OUT I SAY, OUT!" Tears of rage started to run down the old woman's face.
Xena felt small. Smaller than she had in a long time. Had all the good things she had done still meant nothing?! There were still people who felt this way about her? How? She sat in shock for a minute before gathering her satchel and getting out of the tavern. The street was busy and she felt vulnerable, and dashed for the next tavern she saw. It was a rougher atmosphere. The rogue's favorite hangout. Much more busy than the previous one. Again, she found a table secluded in the corner where she could be alone to contemplate in her mead. The men were boisterous and the drunken were becoming more edgy. Xena could hear small arguments begin before diffusing into nothing.
Her new waitress was much younger, and simply asked what she wanted, and left. No small talk. A good thing too, because Xena was not in the right mind to be ridiculed like before anytime soon. She raised her legs and crossed them on top of the table and began to recline. Surveying her surroundings she saw the same old type of looters, mongrels, and disconcerting individuals that always inhabited a place like this. Then something held her stare.
"I TOLD YOU TO WATCH IT PRETTY BOY", a BIG and absurdly tall, bald, and odorous man blurted out. "IF'n you BUMP into MY drink AGAIN -You CAN BUMP into THIS!"
Xena couldn't see just who this man was talking to....she leaned over as the man's fist came down on his supposed trespasser. She watched as a mop of black curls fell to the ground in a loud *thump*. She strained more to see the man's face, however, the hood on his black cloak prevented her view. As he stumbled to get up - he was kicked down, and again he tried-meeting the same foot in his gut. The man held a hand up in an attempt for a truce...and that's when Xena saw it. A ring- Ares' ring.
Instantaneously, Xena guarded the broken figure panting on the floor. With a sharp kick to the groin and knocking the giant man over the head with the hilt of her sword-she knocked the antagonist out. Satisfied he was out of commission, she kneeled down to the covered figure. "Are you ok? And just HOW do you have Ares' ring? Are you associ-" Before Xena could finish her sentence, a strong pair of hands came up and lowered the obstructing hood. There, now standing, was Ares.
Xena's eyes locked on his. Ares' face battered and bruised, hurt and humility in his eyes. Xena tried to speak, but her voice caught in her throat. Before she could mutter a sound, this once powerful being pulled his hood back up and ran out into the crowded street.
Xena dashed after him. The busy crowds and venders tables obstructed her view. She scanned the area with her piercing blue eyes and saw….nothing. He was gone. A thought then occurred to her as she surveyed the crowd-everyone seemed to be acting normal. Normally kind people, were just being that, kind. Apparently, Ares' current condition was not affecting mortals. She knew she had to find him though. Something was wrong, dreadfully wrong.
She stepped further into the hustle and bustle of the street. Peering down alleys, looking inside shops, and still nothing. Xena ran to the stable where Argo had been bedded for the night. Quickly, she saddled the mare, and mounted. Corinth had been built with one road leading into the city. The palace at the head of the town. Xena glanced over the crowds once more, now mounted with a better view. Seeing that there was still no trace of him, she galloped off out of town.
Ares ran, his heart pounding vigorously in his chest. Tears catching in his throat. He was ashamed. In a fit of blinded emotion he had given up his powers. Pounding his sword so deep into the rock it was consumed up to the hilt. No one would find it, but in this mortal state, he would never be able to retrieve it. He was too prideful and self-conscience to ask for help from the other Olympians. Why did he feel this-mortality- was necessary? He had forgotten the mortal pains, embarrassment, and rediscovering these loathsome things, Xena had seen him cower. It was too much, by a nearby tree he collapsed into a fit of remorse.
Just then he heard a rustle behind him. There she was, a blank expression on her face. "If you've come here to gloat-just leave." he snapped. Ares started to fiddle expressionless with his boot laces. There's no way I'm going to tell her how I ended up like this. She would just yell or laugh-or both.
Xena took a deep breath and dismounted from Argo. Slowly, ever so slowly, she walked up to him. Sitting leaned up against a tree, she stayed standing and leaned as well. She glanced down at him, still confused as to what was going on and spoke, "What happened?" The words came simple and direct.
Ares pondered what to say and decided she just needed to know the basics. He clenched his jaw and stared at his feet, "My sword is gone." Please don't as me how it happened, he thought to himself.
"How did it happen?" Xena questioned. She assumed he had angered his father, or a sibling, something of an incompetent manner.
"I DON'T want to talk about it." He felt more vulnerable than he ever had before in his entire existence.
Xena had to know answers to a few things so she continued to prod him. "Well, why is there no rioting going on? Who's watching over your duties? And don't you realize-without your sword-ANYONE is liable to take it?!" Finishing her statement she pulled a piece of bark off the tree and picked at it with her fingers waiting for his reply.
Ares decided to keep his answers short. He didn't want anymore questions, " There's no rioting because I assume Discord has been appointed to keep things under control during my…absence. As far as someone taking my sword…trust me, no…mortal….can get to it." He stared up at her at this.
Her face twisted into another questioning gaze. "Well, Ares- you're mortal. So, I'm assuming that the loss of your powers is some sort of, punishment and only temporary."
Ares laughed inwardly to himself-at himself-this pathetic situation he was in. "Punishment, yes, it's a punishment-as far as the temporary part, we shall see." This certainly is a punishment, self induced perhaps-one none the less.
Xena knew that was all he was about to divulge at this time. The anger and hurt was scrolled across his face. Part of her was ready to walk away now that she knew the mental state of humanity wouldn't suffer. That look held her there though. Compassion over took her senses and she offered him a hand up. Ares stared at her hand outstretched in his face and slowly, took it and stood. Xena looked him over. This time his mortal clothing wasn't that of a commoner. His attire looked basically the same as that of his normal black leathers. Infact, the only denote of his mortality were the bruises on his face.
Xena stared up and noticed the moon at full mast in the sky. "We should make camp for the night. Unless, you want to go back to Corinth and stay at an inn?" Her tone was dry.
At the mere mention of going back to Corinth, Ares shook his head in a clear answer.
"Ok, well, go look for twigs -anything that will burn and start a fire. I'll go track something to eat." Xena then walked off into the shadows.
Ares sighed heavily. She wasn't necessarily being nice to him, but she was doing more than expected. He still felt embarrassed from the tavern incident. All he had done was accidentally bump into that man. Ironically, at one time, that man was in one of his legions. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
Within the hour Xena returned, two rabbits in each hand. Neither spoke a word. Thoughtfully, she skinned and put them over the fire. The crackles and sparks the only noise. She watched the fire dance off his brooding features. Deeper she stared and thought quietly to herself -Imagine, every fiber in you changing and contorting into something you were NEVER meant to be. Feeling all you've known slip away and being thrown into a flurry of chaos. She realized she had been staring too long. Xena shrugged and figured whatever he had done, everything would work it's way out. She wasn't his babysitter, and at the same time, she felt obligated to watch over him while he was in this state. Xena didn't trust Discord taking over his duties.
After eating, Ares immediately fell asleep-to drown his pain from his conscience. Xena watched him sleep for awhile, not fully understanding just why he had lost his powers. The fatigue began to sink over her though, and she sprawled out on the other side of the fire. She didn't want him to get the wrong idea.
The suns warm rays woke Xena. Her black hair dangled as she leaned up and looked over. Ares wasn't there. She scanned the premises and finally saw him. There was mighty Ares sitting on the edge of a fallen log, rubbing Argo's head. Xena smirked at this. She couldn't deny, seeing him vulnerable and without that egotistical exterior amused her. Standing finally, she grabbed her armor, togs, and boots.
"Looks like Argo doesn't know any better" Xena blurted.
Ares brows lowered into a confused look, "Now, just what is that supposed to mean?"
Xena smiled, "Well, it doesn't look like she's bitten you yet."
He was not amused in the least. A sarcastic glare came over his face. "Very funny, Xena."
She couldn't believe it, but that look actually made her feel a tad remorseful for making the comment. Xena looked down and decided to change the subject. "Listen, I'm supposed to go meet up with Gabrielle, it's about a week or so journey. I don't know what is going on in your situation, but from last night's events at the tavern…" she paused, " I don't think you should be unaccompanied. Soo, if you want to come, I won't run you off with my sword."
Ares features softened a tad, "Well, if you wouldn't mind. I'm new to this all-"
Xena snorted back-this was still Ares she was talking to, "Well, it's NOT that I DON'T mind. I just don't see any other way around it. Face it Ares, you are a target, and I don't know of anyone else who's going to even give you the time of day."
"Well, then, don't do me any favors, Xena " Ares began to storm off. Xena sighed deeply, ran, and cut him off from going any further.
Her features went matter-of-factly. "Listen, this is hard enough as it is for me. You have done so many horried things to me and those I care about, Ares. I don't know what you can honestly expect from me. A kind calm demeanor? I'm doing this because I don't trust Discord. I'm doing this because I would feel…guilty if the order of things were changed because I left you to get slaughtered."
"Are you FINISHED?", he boomed back.
Xena's face went soft, "I'm also doing this because, I do remember a time, though brief-that you actually had a heart. Let's just go, you'll probably get your powers back as soon as your father realizes what a mistake having Discord and her bondage boys in charge is."
A half-smile crept on Ares' face. "Fine, I'll try to stay as invisible as possible. You won't have any problems from me." He itched his head, and adjusted a tog. Xena grabbed Argo's reigns and began to mount. Seeing this Ares was about to inquire about getting on too, but thought better of it.
They were on their way. Where the destination was, was of no consequence to Ares. That was the furthest thing from his mind. Instead he brooded on just what he was going to do. From time to time he'd look up at Xena and she would look down on him and frown.
The further they went the more his feet ached from the strain. He was indeed becoming more accustomed to his body. The silence was held till finally the sun began to set. Xena stopped Argo and looked to Ares. "Listen, we're going to have to make camp again." And that was it. They made camp. Eaten a dinner of bread and cheese, not a word spoken, and then they slept. Again, Xena slept as far away as possible.
Xena woke to a whirling sound. Her eyes sleepily lifted open and there she found the source. There was Ares throwing her chakram-different now from its original form-whole. He smirked as a tree limb fell crashing to the ground. He threw the chakram again when-
"Ares, what are you doing?"
The sound of Xena's voice startled him and as he turned back around he saw the chakram fly back at him at full speed. Ares lunged to the ground and watched as the weapon embedded into a nearby tree. "Ok, that was close. I must say though-this new chakram is mighty fun to toss around." he muttered, breathing heavily.
Xena still laying sat fully up and snickered. "That was actually quite amusing. Nice to see you know how to handle it." With that, she got up and put her gear back on. "You ready for another long walk?" She grinned at the thought of him walking the whole way.
Ares grunted, "Let's go."
No sooner than the Xena mounted Argo, a man in the dress of a Corinthian officer came rushing up. "PLEASE, stop!" He panted, the air finally returning to his lungs as he bent over. "Listen, my name is Raken, I'm part of King Iphicle's war council."
Ares ears burned at the sound of the word "war". Xena glanced to the now mortal, then back to Raken. "What's going on then?", she questioned.
Raken briefly glanced at Ares then back to Xena, " There has been word that an army from the west is heading for Corinth. They've already sacked the other smaller cities along the way. King Iphicles had heard word you had been in Corinth recently, and asked that I find you. Hercules has told him of your expertise in these situations."
Xena squinted, "I see, well what about Hercules- is he planning to help as well?"
Raken eagerly nodded back, "Oh yes, as a matter of fact, he's in Corinth as we speak."
She pondered for a minute, "Ok, listen Raken, there's a town up ahead-they should have a scribe service, I need a letter sent to my friend Gabrielle in Yukonus, that I will be delayed in reaching her."
The officer complied and ran off for the town.
Xena looked at Ares and reached her hand down. "Come on, we've go to go."
This gesture surprised him, "Are you sure you don't mind me riding with you?"
"I don't really have a choice. We need to get to Corinth immediately and with you on foot- we would be delayed. So, come on." Xena's hand felt the warmth of Ares' crawl into her grasp as she helped steady him onto Argo. As soon as they were situated Xena looked back and grinned maniacally, "Hold onnn" and before he knew it, they were off.
Ares' hands finally made their way to Xena's slender waist and he held onto her as though she were his lifeline. He could feel her black hair slap his face and reveled in it. The whole time the two had been together since being mortal, for some reason he felt the most connected to her now. Perhaps it was because they were rushing to go to war. Or maybe, just maybe…
They traveled a long distance before Xena stopped Argo. "We need to camp, Argo needs to regain her strength." It was true, the forthcoming army wouldn't be reaching Corinth for at least another day or two and they all needed their rest.
Ares jumped off to the ground and automatically started gathering wood. Seems as though she has me trained, he snickered to himself. Xena had gone off in search of food.
Sitting at the new fire, Ares took the isolation as an opportunity to think about his relationship or lack thereof, with Xena.. He had been hard on her. She was right, he couldn't expect anything from her. He gave up his powers himself. She never asked him to do it. He had been secretly resenting her for making him feel…Ares now realized how wrong he was. Emotion is a gift. One of his infamous grins crossed his face.
"What are you smiling about?" Xena had returned two rabbits in hand, "That happy to see that it's rabbit for dinner again? Good thing these woods are hopping with them."
Ares felt caught a tad off guard and just muttered, "Oh, yeah-rabbit. Yumm"
"Well, hey- I know it's not -ambrosia- or anything-but, you can handle it." Xena felt comfortable to joke with him now for some reason. He smiled at her and winked. She returned his gesture with a kick in the shin, "Ok, come on and help me skin them." Ares took a rabbit and a dagger and began to work. Then something happened.
As the two prepared their meals, they TALKED. They actually talked! Not about anything of importance, rather just joking and making fun of each other.
"Xena, Warrior Princess, she flips, she kicks, she skins rabbits!" Ares spoke the words out in a Salmoneus kind of way.
Xena laughed at this and simply replied, "I have MANY skills" Then she smirked. "Ares you're getting kinda ripe over there mister."
He sarcastically smiled and shrugged. "I never had to worry about that…before…" His humor was gone.
Xena lowered her eyes. "Do you want to talk about it now?" Ares shook his head denoting that he really didn't. Xena knew that he desperately wanted his powers back. She didn't know how to help him though without him telling her the whole of the situation.
He sat there quiet for a moment. A smile crept on his face. A reminiscent grin. "Hey, Xena you were glorious on the battlefield, this so-called army won't know what hit them."
Xena half smiled, "Well, this time I'm on the right side. "
He stared into the fire, "What inspired you to change? And don't tell me it was Hercules, or Gabrielle…people can only say and do so much to have control on another's life." That's how I used to feel power- control...he thought.
Xena felt a surge of realization- he was right. For once he understood. "You're actually right there Ares. You have to look within yourself. Make yourself someone you can live with. That's what I had to do anyway." She stopped and looked down. She was talking to him as if he were a permanent mortal.
Ares paused a long time, he stared deep into Xena's eyes across the flames and simply muttered the words, "I'm sorry."
"Yeah, well, what's done is done now isn't, Ares? We can't change our pasts, we can improve ourselves though. Redemption." Xena moved her attention to the rabbits on the spits. "Ok, these look done- shall we eat?"
Ares, just sat there, a blank expression on his face as the word echoed in his mind, Redemption
**********************************************************
They got an early start that morning. Together on Argo they raced along the path. They were reaching one of the busiest road junctions and had to slow up. Wagons and other riders passed by them and Xena started to notice that something was off. She stopped Argo and asked Ares to slide off, just as she did. Crouching she inspected Argo's shoes. Ares stood and looked around as Xena took care of the mare. Then he saw it. A small child had stepped onto the road in the path of a runaway horse.
Ares didn't know what overcame him. He went by instinct. Immediately he took off in a sprint. The girl finally noticed the oncoming horse and screamed as he lunged and threw her out of the way. He was left standing in the path. A hoof caught him in the leg as he spun and hit the ground. By this time Xena had made her way to them. Looking to the child and seeing she was safe, she looked down at Ares holding his leg.
"ARE YOU OK?!" Xena blurted out in disbelief of what she had just witnessed.
Ares grunted, "Yeah, I think..I'm…ok. Just….ouch, my leg!" He opened the rip in his pants the horse had caused to find a deep wound. Xena peered over and examined it.
"The horse must have had shoes on to make a gnash that deep. We need to get you out of the road before you get taken out again." Xena helped him up and let him lean on her back to where Argo was-on the side of the path. "OK, sit here." She sat him on the grass and went into her saddlebag. Pulling out some sort of white cream she rubbed it on his wound. "What you did for that girl was, " she paused before continuing, "heroic."
Ares became shy and looked down, " I don't know what happened. I just saw her standing there unaware of the danger."
"Well, I'm actually impressed" She replied back.
Ares felt a tap on his shoulder. He looked to his side to see the small girl standing there. She innocently fidgeted back and forth, her little green dress swaying , an arm behind her back. "This is for you." With that the child smiled and revealed a flower. Ares looked at Xena for approval. She just grinned proudly. He delicately took the flower from the girl. Upon taking it, the girl ran away in a bashful giggling state.
Xena reached down to help Ares up. He had placed the flower behind his ear. She couldn't help but laugh at this. He smiled in a child-like fashion as he walked to Argo.
"So, what was wrong with her?" He asked.
"Well, her shoe had gotten a tad loose. I fixed it though so hop up there." Xena motioned for him as she mounted. He followed her lead.
Ares felt different, he had done something because he NEEDED too. Not for his own gain, not for any other reason than to help another. It was a step.
*******************************************************************
"Finally, Corinth" Xena muttered, exhausted from the long ride. Entering the town, they dismounted. Ares noticed Xena's body language begin to change.
"What's wrong Xena?"
She glanced around, a look of remorse on her face, "This place, a lot of people resent me for my past."
Ares knew that feeling all too well. The only person who's opinion mattered was Xena though. He knew how much she resented him for all the things he'd put her through. He felt a change in his being though. One that made him feel almost new.
They dropped off Argo at the local stable and made their way to the palace. Entering it they were ushered into Iphicles' throne room and asked to wait. Xena looked at Ares and then elbowed him.
"Um, Xena-what was that for?"
"Just wait," she replied "you're going to get a kick out of this."
Iphicles entered the room , "You must be Xena- and you-" Iphicles stopped short and stared at Ares and Ares back at him. It wasn't because Iphicles recognized who Ares was-no, what caused the stares was the uncanny resemblance. Ares was darker in his features and Iphicles was clean shaven, other than that- they could have been mistaken for twins.
Ares leaned into Xena, "This….is….creepy" She grinned back and then looked to the king.
Xena was about to ask who was leading this army when a tall muscular man walked into the room. "XENA!"
Hercules strode up to her and embraced the warrior in a warm hug. Ares felt himself sink. What would Herc say about this. Would he be a problem? Ares didn't want to come off as weak, and made the first move.
Through clenched jaw he muttered, "Hello, Hercules"
Herc gave Xena a disapproving look. "What's HE doing here Xena? He probably has something to do with this warlord!"
Ares was shocked. Hercules didn't notice he was mortal. His bruises had faded and he was dressed as he normally would..so perhaps appearences truly WERE deceiving - he looked at Xena conveying to not tell Herc of his condition. Noticing his request, Xena simply looked at Herc "He's here to help actually, and I have a feeling it's Discord that we have to worry about."
Iphicles just stood by taking in the comments and conversation. Hercules was about to question Ares motives when there was a sudden bright flash. Ares rolled his eyes and rolled his tongue about in his mouth. "Discord, great- " he mumbled under his breath.
The black haired woman wore bondage like leather gear. Her red lipstick eerily curling over every word. "That's right. And XENA! Aren't we just so smart- OF COURSE I'm behind this. I had to test out my new domain --if you know what I mean."
Hercules gazed questioningly at everyone until his eyes fell to Discord. "No, actually I DON'T know what you mean. Why don't you enlighten us?"
Ares warningly glared at her, and she just laughed in his face. "Well, JERKules, you see, your brother here has seemed to-ohhhh, shall we say- misplaced his sword and is now nothing but a feeble mortal. See." With that Discord grabbed Ares leg-exposing his wound.
Ares balled his fist and went to deck horrid woman. She easily caught his fist in her hand and pointing an index finger at him, a blast of energy tossed him against the wall. "I've always wanted to do that!" Discord giggled. Before anyone could even make a step closer to her-she vanished, her cackle still bouncing off the walls.
"Ughh..." He moaned as he rolled over onto his hands, face resting against the floor. Slowly, he brought a hand up to steady him as he gathered his strength. Xena walked over to him to assess the damage.
"That was quite a hit you took there."
He shook his head. The blast was nothing compared to a full on attack. He knew Discord was capable of more damage. Ares regained his composure as he walked back to the middle of the room.
Iphicles at this time walked up to his throne, plush red velvet seat, and sat down. Hercules turned his attention to Ares.
"What's going on here Ares?! How did you lose your power, and JUST what does Discord have to do with it all?" Hercules was in a foul mood. Not only was Iphicles' kingdom at risk, but now, his ex-lover was toting around Ares.
"Listen Herc, it's none of your business as to WHY I'm mortal. As far as Discord goes- she obviously is *filling in* as it were." Ares rubbed his chest where he had been hit by the bolt. He felt cornered by Herc's probing line of questioning and was not in the mood for it.
Hercules on the other hand immediately turned to look at Xena who had been standing there with her arms crossed looking rather bored hearing information she already knew being retold. The look on Herc's face conveyed that he thought she knew more and that she had to say - Xena responded. "Listen, I know as much as YOU do. Ares won't tell me the whole story either. Frankly, I don't know how or why he lost his powers, but our MAIN concern should be Discord. She's the one with the power now. HER army is the one attacking Corinth, so just leave Ares alone if he wants to sit in his own silence." With that, she looked at Ares in her normal stoic manner. Not revealing a hint of what she was really thinking.
Herc's blue eyes steamed, his expression told all. He did not like Ares and it was apparent that the feeling was mutual. Herc had lost Serena due to his meddling. The blonde haired hero paced a few steps until finally getting down to the matter at hand.
"Ok, listen up. The army - They should be here by midday tomorrow. The Corinthian guard matches them in number, but I don't know the skill level that the enemy troops have. There's only one way into this city- so we know where they'll be coming from. We just need to be organized and ready."
Xena looked at Iphicles questioningly. "Is there ANY hidden ways into the city? Anything that perhaps others could know about? A secret entrance? " Iphicles assured her the city was secure just as a scribe called him away to take care of other precautions such as food, bandages, and water supplies.
Herc glanced over at Ares and Xena, the two of them working together was so appealing to him. Surely, Xena knew what chaos followed him and would be smart enough to lose him soon. It was getting dark out and there was a lot to do. Hercules hugged Xena and told her goodnight. He truly cared about her. She had so much heart and he didn't want to see it corrupted again by the likes of his half brother. Before leaving the room, he glared at Ares, despise in his eyes.
The room left the warrior princess and her former mentor once again alone-at least for a minute. A pewny servent came dashing in to escourt them to their quarters. The palace had been going through renovations so, according to the scrawny man, they would have to *share* a room. Xena rolled her eyes at this prospect. Ares is just going to have to take the floor .....
Showing them to the door, the servent bowed and scurried off again. Ares decided to make a quick joke. "Shall I carry you in princess?" Xena smirked as she pushed past him into the room.
What a surprise. The room was large. One bed yes, but there was a big comfy looking chair that she was sure Ares wouldn't mind sleeping in. The bed was beautiful with its large posts with silk draped across. The pillows and sheets billowed large. Even the coloring of the room was to her liking. A mauve color scheme with an even darker shade of the color used for trim. Her eyes followed along and fell upon a table. It was dressed with fruits, and roast quail. No doubt that Iphicles had been kind enough to have it prepared for them. A good thing, Xena was starving and by the looks of Ares, he could use something to eat as well.
"That food looks so delicious-I never thought I'd say that about something that wasn't made with ambrosia." Ares hurried over to the table, sat and began to help himself to the scrumptious meal that beckoned to him. Xena chuckled to herself as she stepped over to take her seat. She fixed herself a plate and began to satisfy her craving.
"You know Ares, you're sleeping on that chair over there because the bed is ALL MINE."
He stopped eating and looked up at her. "What?! Who named you queen? Maybe I need the bed more than you, being mortal now and all." This comment made Xena shift in her seat. He had a point. Perhaps he did need it more, she wouldn't just offer it up graciously though-oh no, she had to make it a sport.
"Fine, we'll arm wrestle for it then." Xena's eyes flashed with anticipated amusement. He was mortal now- she had a very good chance of actually beating him. Ares accepted the offer.
Each moved to a different end of the table so as not to rattle their plates. Hand clasped in hand they both situated themselves into a comfortable position. When Xena finally gave the go ahead, Ares realized he still had a lot of strength even in this form. Slowly he started to push her arm down when Xena kicked him in the shin, easily taking his shock as an opportunity to pin him. "I WIN!",she announced.
Ares chuckled and told her just what he thought of that supposed win. "Cheater! You can't just go kicking me in the shin. Can't you play fair?"
To this Xena who was laughing replied simply, "Why? You never do." Then she did it, she did that smirk-the one where she knew she had you. Ares didn't know what to say, so instead he grabbed a grape off his plate and tossed it at her. To this Xena grabbed ammo from her own arsenal, in the form of a roasted, slimey tomato -which hit Ares square in the face. Laughter grew louder from each of them as Ares got up and pushed Xena's face down into another roasted tomato. Just then, of all times, Hercules burst in the door. Both Ares and Xena looked up, tomato juice rolling down their faces.
Herc stood there a minute, trying desperately not to crack a smile. "I've heard about having egg on your face....but...." The red faced wonders burst back into laughing . "Anyway, Xena I just wanted to tell you that we're going to start preparing the men at dawn in the courtyard." Xena nodded back at him in agreement as he stepped out and closed the door.
Xena got up and looked for a towel. Finding one, she cleaned herself off and tossed it over to Ares. Another chuckle escaping her lips as it landed on his head. He looked back at her, and chose his words carefully, "You know Xena, we *could* share the bed. I promise no funny stuff will happen. I just think we both need a good night's rest in anticipation of tomorrow."
"Since when were you going to actually help in the battle? I thought you would just watch from the sidelines as you always have."
Ares pouted, "Well, I thought I could be of some help."
"No, it's going to be too dangerous. If you plan on making it back to Olympus, you just better stay as far from the actual fight as possible."
He remained silent. She did have a point. He was vulnerable in this form and couldn't risk harm. "Ok, I guess you're right....but, what do you think about the proposed bed situation?"
Xena shifted on to her other foot and crossed her arms. "If I feel so much as your breath on me during the night..."
Ares raised his hands in submission, "Yes, I know. I told you, I'll be a complete gentleman."
"I'll believe it when I see it", was all she retorted with.
Xena began to take her boots off, then her armor. Ares couldn't help but stare. Sure she had done this for the past two nights, but now, here in these luxurious accomodations and his change of mood, he was glued to the sight. Her long black hair caressed her shoulders as she leaned down to untie her laces, and he couldn't help the warm feeling it inspired in him to see her so soft. He began to grow self-conscience due to his staring and quickly averted his view. Taking off his own vest.
This time, Xena stared. Even in this mortal form, he still looked powerful. His whispy chest hair reaffirming his masculinity. She stopped herself from staring and got into bed. Ares followed her lead and got in on his side. Making sure to give her plenty of personal space, he hovered close to the edge. Her back to his, they rested. Neither really falling asleep. "Ares..." she whispered.
"I'm not asleep if that's what you're wondering about." He was starting to feel nervous. His desire to hold her was making him unable to relax.
"Oh, well, I just wanted to tell you that I think you should apologize to Hercules"
"What for? There's a pretty long list. I don't think he and I will ever be close Xena-so why even try?"
"Because, no strings, so what if he doesn't neccessarily welcome you into his open arms. The point is-you have done AWFUL things to him. Regardless if he accepts it or not- you owe him at LEAST an apology."
Ares thought about this. Why was she bringing this up now? She was of course, right. He had done awful atrocities to his brother. He didn't want to talk about this at the moment though. Ares rolled over to face her back. "Xena, I remember the first time I saw you. You then, just as now, were magnificent. Those raven ringlets falling about your face as you shouted into the wind at those villagers. You instilled belief in them. Belief that they could make a stand and fight to defend themselves."
Xena rolled over and faced him, "You saw that?"
Ares picked up a lock of her hair and ran his fingers through it. "I watched the whole time. From the speech, to the battle, to afterward. You never faltered."
"I was following my instinct that day. It didn't work out perfectly like I had thought it would. And after that, well, you know what happened. Even to this day I still feel like I'm walking in the shadow of my former self." She stared into nothing, reliving her past in her mind.
Ares stared at her, seeing the remorse for his past written on her face. He continued to run his finger through the lock of hair, intently waiting for her to go on.
"The day I found you.....that might have not happened. I had originally went to the tavern on the other side of town. The server recognized my name and .........I haven't seen such hate in someone's eyes in so very long...I thought by now, after all this time, that shadow would be gone." Xena grew quiet, and watched as Ares began to speak.
"Believe it or not Xena, I know what that feels like. The only difference is that, the hate I see, comes from someone I care about...." Ares halted. He couldn't believe he just had told her that. His eyes locked onto hers, and something in him just took over. Cautiously, he leaned forward. He felt her breath fall across his lips, the sweet essence that was her. Lightly, ever so lightly, he skimmed her lips with his own. He felt aroused by their soft petal like feel and he pressed into them, slow at first, the with a demanding strength and a feel of urgency.
Xena's mind raced, she had seen him lean into her, test the depths of her waters, and now conquer them. She returned the echoes of feel back. Her body shaked from the intensity. Then she felt him pull away. Her eyes still closed, lips still pouted. Her lashes lifted up to see Ares head in his hands. She had an overwhelming sense of regret rush over her. How did she allow that to happen?
Ares lifted his head, "I'm so sorry. I don't know what came over me. Please, just- I'm sorry." With that Ares flipped onto his side and faced the wall. Xena stayed still and stared at his back for a moment. She was still assessing what had just happened. She finally came to the conclusion that there was *no* rhyme or reason to be found. Xena flipped to face the other wall. Again the two were back to back-neither asleep.
==============================================
"Ares......Areeeeeeees, ARES WAKE UP!"
He forced his eyes open, and flipped on his side. A black plume of hair rested on the pillow, her face hidden under the covers.
"Very funny Xena, wake me up, then you stay snug."
Ares lifted the sheet and jumped out of the bed.
"DISCORD!!"
"That's right darling. Your little Xena already got up and is currently off to go see Jerkules to go over plans. I think he just might have another little interesting fact to tell her though-that is, when she sees him."
"What are you going on about you heartless wench?" Ares hated Discord's games.
"Well, I still don't know WHY you became mortal-but, I do know THIS. It was of your OWN doing. None of the other Olympians understand you either and your father, well, he was none too pleased. Good thing he knows that I'm the right girl for the job. I just informed Mr. Do-right of what, well, I *think* is ....interesting information."
Ares furiously put on his boots, "You are so pathetic."
Discord merely cackled, "Well, call it whatever you want. By the way- I finally moved in like I had always wanted, and when I find your sword....you can kiss any chance you had of regaining your former grace back goodbye." She raised her fist defiantly and disappeared.
***********************************************************
Ares had to find Hercules. He desperately wanted to keep his business private. Rounding a corner in the palace, there his brother stood. Good, looks like he hasn't seen Xena yet.....
"Well, if it isn't my newly mortal brother , Ares" Hercules chirped.
"Listen brother, I know Discord came by to tell you a few things. Please, I do NOT want Xena to know that I put down my own sword." Ares eyes looked pleadingly at his half-brother.
"What does Xena have to do with this anyway, Ares? Is this another one of your lame scams to try and bring her back to your clutches? Or just another insincere mind twist you like to play on us?" Hercules made no secret of his distaste.
Ares stopped for a minute and contemplated. Xena was right. He did owe Herc an apology. He was his brother, and cared about the safety of his most prized joy. Ares took a deep breath and a leap of trust and faith.
"Hercules, I know this may not be the right time. I realize I should have told you this long ago, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for all of the hurt, and pain, and ..... I'm sorry for every under-handed thing I ever did to you. I know that my words may mean nothing, that they'll have no change on your view of me-and I accept that. I just felt it neccessary to tell you finally. I also don't want you to think that I'm apologizing to you to have my secret kept secret. I would have apologized even if you did go to Xena with the news. I know I have done much more horrid things to you and your family."
Ares looked down and shaked. He couldn't believe he had just heard those words of remorse pass through his lips and into the ears of his sibling. He had to continue on though. "As for what this has to do with Xena..." Ares breathed deeply in, finally prepared to try and find trust within the brother he never tried to care for, "I....When I heard that Xena had.....died...I slipped into a downward slide of remorse and regret. I remembered every touch, taste, every sound. I looked back at the good times we shared, and the bad....and my heart broke. I decided it was time to face the truth with her. Try to make anew. When I messed it up again, my self-loathing spun me out of control. The last time she was decent to me, I was mortal. In a daze of unbridled emotion I ....." Ares whispered the rest into Herc's ear. He didn't want anyone to over hear. "And that brings us to where
I am today."
Herc stood there, his features beginning to take in what Ares had told him. Not only take it in, but understand it as well. Hercules' eyes bore into his brother....."I believe you." Hercules cautiously raised his hand to to Ares' shoulder and gave a reassuring pat. "It's your place to tell Xena, not mine." At that remark, Hercules walked out into the courtyard. Ares followed him.
"Wasn't she supposed to meet you by now Hercules?"
"Yes, she should have already been here Ares, I don't know what could be taking her so long."
Ares reached out and grabbed one of the Corinthian soldiers. "Have you seen Xena at all?" A tad of desperation in his voice.
The young soldier, dressed handsomely in his guard uniform, looked up and informed Ares and Herc that Xena had already given the men their strategy speech and told them she was going to survey the perimeter of the the land.
Ares was worried, really worried. He couldn't look in on her in his mirror to make sure she was alright as he did from time to time on Olympus. The fear of losing her again gripped him. Suddenly, a plethra of armed men came running down from the great hill overlooking Corinth. Herc looked over to Ares, "It's started."
***************************************************************
Herc ran into action, pummeling the opposition, working his way farther into the struggle until Ares lost sight of him. Ares himself remembered Xena's words of keeping away from the fight. He stood there in his leathers, regal looking as always, scanning the carnage. The Corinthian Guard were attacking their oppressors voraciously-like a mother protects her child. Even Iphicles could be seen protecting his kingdom. His eyes continued to search, probing for just a sign of Xena's attendance. Then he saw her, not Xena---he saw Argo-riderless in the fray of the battle. Fear rose again . Ares grabbed a sword from the limp hands of a fallen soldier as he cut and slashed his way to the mare. He may not have had his powers, but now accustomed to this mortal body- he still had his skill. Ares fought bravely to get to his destination. The ground was being consumed by the bodies and still he pushed onward.
Within arms length of Argo, a hand gripped Ares neck. Before him stood the man who had mercilessly attacked him in the tavern that first night. He must have been a scout sent ahead ......
The beastly man lifted Ares off the ground, instinctively, while being lifted, he placed his feet up along the man's chest and flipped out of his grip, landing back on his chest knocking him down. Ares continued to Argo, but hearing the man shout at him, he turned. The slime tossed a dagger straight for Ares' head. Using his reflexes, he stopped the dagger an within an inch of his face, and immediately threw it back. The enemy went down again, and this time he didn't get back up.
Finally, Ares grabbed a hold of Xena's mare, mounted and started off on a mad gallop looking for the beautiful warrior. Ares frantically looked around, searching desperately for a black mane of hair. The anarchy seethed in the brutal heat. Ares rode faster through the fighting men, mowing down the opposition from his mount, and there-there in the distance she was. Surrounded by thugs. His feet nudged Argo to go faster and reaching Xena's opponents he brought two of them down with his weapon. He reached his arm down for Xena, who grabbed ahold and climbed aboard.
He felt her arms tightly wrap around his torso as he directed Argo to where Iphicle's fought. Every path through the horrid display they took looked like the next. The Corinthians were winning. Their defenses and skill were out matching the enemy who slowly, but stubbornly began to withdraw. Xena and Ares jumped off Argo and ran up to Iphicles who had been surrounded. Xena screamed out, "PROTECT THE KING!!!!!!!!!!", in an attempt to draw more of the guard to help.
Suddenly, a man came crashing out of the sky, landing on the thugs who persued Iphicles. A path cleared from where the man had came from, and out walked Hercules. The opposition finally could not withstand the beating from the Guard and retreated.
Ares turned to Xena and placed his scraped hands on her shoulders tenderly. He looked into her face, to read her condition. "Are you ok? " he asked with pure sincerity.
Xena stood there, and became lost in his dark brown eyes. He came to save me...his immortal life was at risk and he came to save me, why? She felt herself tingle as he raised his hand to her face and lightly caressed it. She felt like she could drown in this very moment. Her hair caught on the gentle breeze that began to crawl in. Xena couldn't move, she was transfixed on what had just occurred. Perhaps that kiss last night wasn't just...
"Xena, you ok?" Hercules had walked up to the pair, placing his hand on Xena's arm.
She came out of her daze and looked over at Hercules. Ares remained standing in the same spot. His hands now empty. Then, in the midst of the victory, a familiar flash of light rained down.
"Well, well, if it isn't the do-gooder gang. Please Ares, don't tell me they got you to sign up too."
"Discord get over it, you lost today. Your attempt to take Ares' place will never come to pass." Hercules spoke determined and with vigor.
"Oh, JERKules, and what makes you so sure of that?" she hissed. Her temper becoming more inflamed.
Xena, who stood directly next to Herc, spoke at this, "Because when it comes right down to it, you're just a cheap imitation."
This infuriated Discord to no end. Her eyes began to glow a disturbing black as she clenched her fists. With all her strength she blasted an energy surge at them. Everything had gone into slow motion. Ares breathed in. Just as he had done before with the little child in the road, he lept to block the destructive current from them. It hit him with such force that he was thrown like a rag doll off the ground.
Xena and Herc got up to see that Ares wasn't there with them. Turning to Discord their stares prompted an answer.
"I can't believe he did that! If he's hurt beyond repair, the other's better not blame me. It was his own choice to give up his sword!!" Discord angerly spat the words out and vanished.
Xena heard the words repeat in her head...."It was his own choice to give up his sword!!" She didn't have time to analyze what it meant. Ares took a hit that could kill and he was no where to be seen. She scavenged through the bodies laying around her, looking desperately for him. "Ares where are you...... Ares......" She called out his name, bearly over a whisper. Then fear of the unknown hit her.
"AREEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!" She called for him wildly for him.
Hercules and Iphicles, who had just stood there in shock from the moment Discord showed up, helped in the search. The other soldiers of the Corinthian Guard had began to take the dead from the site to move them somewhere for a safe burial. Suddenly, Xena heard one of the men shout for her. "XENA! There's a man over here not dressed in the attire from either side! Looks like he's gone, where should I put him?"
Xena's heart sank to the bottom of her gut as she climbed over the carnage before her. Reaching the soldier, she braced herself and looked down. A look of mourning exuded from her face. She stared achingly down at the fallen power. There, battered and broken, lay Ares.
She grabbed his hand and held it to her face. Overcome by shock and grief, she barely felt a squeeze back. His wonderous brown eyes opened and stared deep into her. He mustered up what strength he had, and breathed out the words, "I did it all for you....for the love of you." Ares eyes rolled and he passed out.
After having taken Ares, weak body to safety within the palace, Xena grabbed Hercules in utter desperation. "We have to find his sword NOW! It's the only way I can think to save him Hercules. Please, he's changed, I know he has."
Hercules nodded in agreement. His brother risked himself so that they could survive. "I know where the sword is, -- Olympus."
***********************************************************************
"Zeus...."
In Iphicles' throne room, Hercules waited and as he expected, a bright flash of light and energy, his father came. Xena stood by Herc's side, impatient and weary.
"I already know what you need me for. All of Olympus is talking about it.I know Ares tried hard to keep the secret surrounding his disappearance confidential- " He stared knowingly at Xena. "Yes, my son risked his power for love.....and now look at him." Xena glared at him for she didn't fully understand what he meant.
Hercules jumped in, "Xena, Ares became mortal, out of a distraught emotional state, brought on by guilt of how he's treated you. He thought that if you could find some common bond with him, some...redeeming quality, that perhaps you would realize that he's sorry and that he....."
"Loves me....", a single tear rolled down her face. She puckered her lips to keep the rest of them at bay. Xena sucked them back, looked at Zeus and with determination, demanded that he retrieve the sword for them.
Zeus smiled and in a similar fashion that the small child Ares rescued did, he pulled a hand from behind his back and there it was.....humming with such power it almost sang, Ares' sword. She looked up at Zeus, a hint of fear in her eyes.
"Don't worry dear, you won't change-I've made it so that you can take his sword to him without consuming its power."
Xena's hands shook as she took the sword within her grasp. Its hum reminded her of the first time Ares place the chakram in her hands. She began to walk to his room, stopping and turning only for a moment. "I want to thank you for saving your son, -and to Hercules-I.... I need to be alone with him now."
***********************************************************************
She continued down the hall and entered the room. Xena looked down at him. Ares' beautiful face marred by battle, his body broken, his force weak. She took his hands and put them palms up on top of his torso. Gently she took his sword and pressed it to his awaiting fingers, feeling a power surge through the both of them. A bright light shone through him as the scratches, bruises, and other wounds mended. The dirt that covered his face cleared to a smooth olive completion. His weak stature turned to that of power and force. She leaned over him, and as his eyes opened up, she was the first thing he saw. A tear rolled sideways off his face as he sank his hands into her raven hair.
His chest grew large as the most true words he knew came pouring out, "Xena, I .....I love you."
Her eyes closed in deep satisfaction at hearing those words, and to them she echoed back, "I love you too- you've erased the pain."
At hearing this, Ares' heart soared. He leaned up to her, and kissed her with such passion and intensity. She followed pursuit. He pulled her down onto the bed he himself was on and rolled on top of her, taking control. He had waited so long for this. To hold his warrior princess in his arms, holding her to his heart and feeling like she truly felt the same. He moved off her mouth to gently placing kisses along the rest of her face, and trailing down to her neck, the intensity seized him. She reached for his vest as he reached for her armor. From there it was pure togetherness. Wrapped up in each other. Becoming one, dizzying heights they scaled and their hearts beat in union.
Xena felt a release like no other. The anger was gone, the resentment. Xena's hands ran through his own black hair, treating each strand as silk. She allowed herself to slip into the depths of this rekindled love, deciding to never let it go..It was true, she felt him that day so long ago. The day Cortese had came - she had never felt anything as intense, and fell in love with it....with *him* instantly.
In the euphoric afterglow of the physical expression of their love, they remained in each other's arms. Continually repeating what their hearts knew all too well. Mortality had taught him compassion. He knew that he would make this work no matter how hard he had to work at it. She was his everything and it was in her, he found redemption..
