Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

One of my favorite albums is The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails. I decided it would be a good idea to share my thoughts and interpretations with the world, so I took on this little project. This can be a very confusing album, and I doubt that too many people can really understand what's going on in it. One reason for this is that it gives a very accurate portrayal of the thought processes of a clinically depressed person. Much of what is said contradicts itself, has no basis in reason, and is very emotionally driven. I will try to clarify as much as I can, but it's really difficult to verbalize a lot of things. I will do my best, nonetheless.

The Downward Spiral depicts a man who is gradually destroying himself. There are three major characters:

Trent is the man who will self-destruct. Evidently, he has made a few decisions in the past that were not very good. I call him Trent because Trent Reznor wrote the lyrics. Since he knows what's going on, I named the character after him. his Tyler Durden, if you will. It's a part of him that he has no control over. I call it the Pig because of the songs Piggy, Heresy, and March of the Pigs.

Annie is Trent's significant other. She and Trent are in serious sexual relationship. I call her Annie because of a line in The Becoming.

Please note that while the lyrics are Trent Reznor's (and used without permission), all opinions herein are mine. They do not reflect the views of Trent Reznor in any way. As always, keep in mind that there are naughty words in these lyrics, so you may be offended, but please don't take it out on me.
