The Poem
atrupanchakam, a poem of five verses was originally composed in the year 1964 by Paramahamsa Shree Bhashya Swamigal, who, in the early hours of the morning, was instructed by His Holiness Anantha Shree Chandrashekhara Bharathi Mahaswamigal, the 34th Jagadguru Shankaracharya of the Dakshinamnaya Shree Sringeri Sharada Peetham, to sing the praises of Mother Aryambal. The Jagadguru, in Shree Bhashya Swami's dream said these words, "MatruPanchakam Likha Ashtottaram vadha" (which means, write the Matrupanchakam, recite the 108 Names)
Abiding the sacred commands of the Jagadguru, Shree Bhashya Swamigal, after performing his daily Anushtaanas and Japas, and other ablutions, is said to have composed the Matrupanchakam (i.e. the five verses) in the Shaardulavikreeditham metre within just fifteen minutes. He also wrote Shree Shankaracharita Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, bearing the instructions of the Jagadguru. Thus it can be undoubtedly concluded that these two masterpeices were composed / writted owing to the inestimable blessings of the Jagadguru Shankaracharya.
It is no wonder, that the poem is very popular and often recited during the Shankara Jayanthi celebrations in all parts of India.
