The Unbreakable Axe

It was a very cold night tonight. We have no electirc or gas heat in this house. If we wish it to no longer be cold, we must make a fire in the woodstove. And so I went outside to chop some wood, but there was only one log left. This log was partly frozen, and completely riddled with knots and harsh grains. I picked up the axe, and began to chop. The log would not split; the most I could do was put a few nicks on the surface. And so I realized that I should not try to break this log. It was impossible.

And so I changed my goal. Instead of trying to break the log with the axe, I decided to break the axe by hitting it against the log. I failed in this goal, as well. No matter how strong the log seemed at first, the axe proved more resilient.

Now I sit before my newly-made fire, made from the splinters of the presumably invulnerable log. And I cannot help but hope someday to find a log that is strong enough to let me break my axe against it.
