Welcome to my Philosophy Notebook. Here's something interesting that happened to me a while back. The first rehearsal of the local Renaissance Fair here in Alaska, I ran into an old friend. We were never incredibly close, but she and I had always felt a mutual interest in getting to know one another. Now, when we met again for the first time in over a year, she was standing about three feet from me, and she turned to look at me at the same time I turned to look at her. And our gazes just locked. And we didn't say anything. It felt like we were staring at each other for hours. In truth, it was probably more like five seconds, but that's still a long time. Look at yourself in the mirror for five seconds, just to give you the idea.

Our paths proceeded to cross numerous times, through pure coincidence. We experienced a few interesting bonding moments, and occasionally circumstances would conspire to bring us closer. It is now about six months later, and she and I have formed a very special relationship.

Now, there are certain people that you just get that feeling from. It's as though you realize there's something in the future regarding them. I get that feeling from time to time, and I imagine other people do, too. It's almost as if we live in the future as well as the past, and we're "remembering" something that "will happen."

Another posibility, which seems much more likely, involves pheromones. Appearance isn't our gut-impulse attracting factor. It's scent. Perhaps the potential for meaningful relationships of any kind can be detected by our most powerful sense, the sense of smell. And perhaps when we get that strange sense of synchronicity when we meet people, that's what's going on.

Or maybe not. Human sense of smell is a difficult thing to test, just because we're largely unaware of what we detect and what we don't. So it would be difficult to test this theory. Perhaps this is yet another thing that we must leave to conjecture. This could be tested by writing down the next time one gets that feeling of synchronicity, but that could just end up being a self-fulfilling prophecy. Another option is to observe it in others, but that's an incredibly difficult thing to recognize from a third-person perspective. Feel free to e-mail me with your thoughts. I would be interested in any experiences you may have had regarding this synchronicity. Maybe together we can formulate a theory, or just have an interesting discussion.
