The match between Mr. Perfect and Buff Bagwell at Road Rage ended in ridiculous amounts of controversy, as the pinfall was counted by Stevie Richards of all people. SCW president Ted DiBiase declared the title vacant in the aftermath, and put it up for grabs in a Four-Way match at Summer Sensation, between former champion Perfect, Bagwell, Richards, and Excellence. Bagwell quit the SCW prior to the match, so it became a Three-Way. After spending most of the year as the SCW's "King-Maker," guiding Kerry Nash and Mr. Perfect to their first title wins, Excellence finally went for his own glory, pinning Richards to take the title.
