Lyrics

He came dancing across the water with his galleons and guns, lookin' for the new world and the palace in the sun. On the shore lay Montezuma with his cocoa leaves and pearls in it's house he often wandered with the secrets of the worlds. And his subjects gathered round him, like a leaves around the tree, in their clothes of many colors for the angry gods to see. And the women all were beautiful and the men stood straight and strong; they offered life in sacrifice so that others could go on. Hate was just a legend and war was never known; people worked together and they lifted many stones. And they carried them to the flatlands, but they died along the way, and they built up with their bare hands what we still can't do today. And I know she's living there, and she loves me to this day; I still can't remember when or how I lost my way. He came dancing across the water, Cortez, Cortez. What a killer.

I'm only pretty sure that I can't take anymore before you take a swing I wonder what are we fighting for when I say out loud I want to get out of this I wonder is there anything I'm going to miss I wonder how's it going to be when you don't know me how's it going to be when you're sure I'm not there how's it going to be when there's no one there to talk to between you and me cause I don't care how's it going to be Where we used to laugh there's a shouting match sharp as a thumbnail scratch a silence I can't ignore like the hammocks and the doorways we spent time in swings empty I don't see lightning like last fall when it was always about to hit me I guess that's how it's going to be how's it going to be when you don't know me anymore how's it going to be Want to get myself back in again the soft dive of oblivion want to taste the salt of your skin the soft dive of oblivion

Once divided nothing left to subtract some words when spoken can't be taken back walks on his own with thoughts he can't help thinking future's above but in the past he's slow and sinking caught a bolt of lightning cursed the day he let it go Nothing man nothing man isn't it something? nothing man She once believed in every story he had to tell one day she stiffened took the other side empty stares from each corner of a shared prison cell one just escapes one is left inside the well and he who forgets will be destined to remember Nothing man nothing man isn't it something? nothing man She don't want him she won't feed him after he's flown away...into the sun...burn... burn... burn nothing man nothing man could have been something nothing man

Throw away the radio suitcase that keeps you awake hide the telephone in case, you realize that sometimes you're just not okay you level off but it's not all right now you need to understand there's nothing strange about this you need to know your friends you need to know that I'll be waving my hand watching you drown watching you scream quiet or loud and maybe you should sleep and maybe you just need a friend as clumsy as you've been there's no one laughing you will be safe in here Throw away this very old shoelace that tripped you again try to shrug it off it's only skin now you need to understand there's nothing fake about this you need to let me in I'm watching you and I'll be waving my hand watching you drown watching you scream no ones around and maybe you should sleep and maybe you just need a friend as clumsy as you've been there's no one laughing you will be safe in here

Summer stretching on the grass summer dresses pass in the shade of willow tree creeps a crawling over me over me and over you stuck together with gods glue it's going to get stickier too it's been a long hot summer lets get undercover don't try too hard to think don't think at all I'm not the only one staring at the sun afraid of what you'd find if you took a look inside not just deaf and dumb I'm staring at the sun not the only one who's happy to go blind There's an insect in your ear if you scratch it won't disappear it's gonna itch and burn and sting you wanna see what the scratching brings waves that leave me out of reach breaking on your back like a beach will we ever live in peace 'cause those that can't do often have to yeah those that can't do often have to preach To the one's staring at the sun afraid you'd gone too far when you took on your guitar not just deaf and dumb staring at the sun not the only ones who'd rather go blind Intransigence is all around military still in town armour plated suits and ties daddy just won't say goodbye referee won't blow the whistle god is good but will he listen I'm nearly great but there is something missing left it in the duty free but you never really belonged to me You're not the only one staring at the sun afraid of what you'd find if you stepped back inside sucking on my thumb I'm staring at the sun not the only one who's happy to go blind

If I had one tear running down your cheek maybe I could cope maybe I'd get some sleep if I had just one moment at your expense maybe all my misery would be well spent Could you cry a little lie just a little pretend that you're feeling a little more pain I gave now I'm wanting something in return so cry just a little for me If your love could be caged, honey, I would hold the key and conceal it underneath that pile of lies you handed me and you'd hunt and those lies they'd be all you'd ever find and that'd be all you'd have to know for me to be fine And you'd cry a little you'd die just a little and baby I would feel just a little less pain I gave now from wanting something in return so cry just a little for me Give it up baby a whimper would be fine some kind of heartache honey give it a try I don't want pity I just want what is mine

They caught the last poor man on a poor man's vacation they cuffed him and confiscated his stuff they dragged his black ass down to the station and said, ok, the streets are safe now all your pretty white children can come out and see spot run and they came out of their houses and they looked around but they didn't see no one My country 'tis of thee to take swings at each other on the talk show tv why don't you just go ahead and turn off the sun 'cuz we'll never live long enough to undo everything they've done to you undo everything they've done to you Above 96th street they're handing out smallpox blankets so people don't freeze the old dogs have got a new trick it's called criminalize the symptoms while you spread the disease and I hold on hard to something between my teeth when I'm sleeping I wake up and my jaw aches and the earth is full of earthquakes My country 'tis of thee to take shots at each other on the primetime tv why don't you just go ahead and turn off the sun 'cuz we'll never live long enough to undo everything they've done to you undo everything they've done to you They caught the last poor man flying away in a shing red cape they took him down to the station and they said, boy you should have known better than to try to escape I ran away with the circus 'cuz there's still some honest work left for bearded ladies but it's not the same going town to town since they put everyone in jail except the cleavers and the brady's My country 'tis of thee to take swings at each other on the talkshow tv why don't you just go ahead and turn off the sun 'cuz we'll never live long enough to undo everything they've done to you undo everything they've done to you

Squint your eyes and look closer I'm not between you and your ambition I am a poster girl with no poster I am thirty-two flavors and then some and I'm beyond your peripheral vision so you might wanna turn your head cuz someday you are going to get hungry and eat most of the words you just said Both my parents have taught be about good will and I have done well by their names just the kindness I've lavished on strangers is more than I can explain still their's many who've turned out their porch lights just so I would think they were not home and hid in the dark of their windows til I passed and left them alone God help you if you are an ugly girl course too pretty is also your doom cuz everyone harbors a secret hatred for the prettiest girl in the room and God help you if you are a pheonix and you dare to rise up from the ash a thousand eyes will smoulder with jealousy while you are just flying past I never tried to give my life meaning by demeaning you and I would like to state for the record I did everything that I could do I'm not saying that I'm a saint I just don't wanna live that way I will never be a saint but I will always say Squint your eyes and look closer I'm not between you and your ambition I am a poster girl with no poster I am thirty-two flavors and then some and I'm beyond your peripheral vision so you might wanna turn your head cuz some day you might find you are starving and eating all of the words that you said

You can't hide behind social graces so don't try to be all touchy feely cuz you lie in my face of all plaves but I got no problem with that really What bugs me is that you believe waht you're saying what bothers me is that you don't know how you feel what scares me is that while you're telling me stories you actually believe that they are real I got no illusions about you guess what I never did when I said, when I said I'll take it I meant, I meant as is Just give up and admit you're an asshole you would be in some good company and I think you'd find that your friends would forgive you or maybe I am just speaking for me When I look around I think this, this is good enough and I try to laugh at whatever life brings cuz when I look down I just miss all the good stuff and when I look up I just trip over things I've got no illusions about you guess what I never did when I say, when I say I'll take it I mean, I mean as is

I may seem tall but I know in certain times I walk small I break in pain I shred apart a chest so weak from searching deep through a dying heart Our yesterday spent in vain pale drawn faces from this breeds shame I'll always love what you have been can I be full is this my sin What will I say to you when I come to you in the final view under one sun for the life of me what will it do to me knowing we'll always be under one sun I can't justify all I know it's always there just never shown no woven threads can weave this blame I give you this now give me the same What will I say to you when I come to you in the final view under one sun for the life of me what will it do to me knowing we'll always be under one sun I find myself at ease if I can somehow just see me for me unconscience to you now is saving me but I will always bleed What will I say to you when I come to you in the final view when said and done for the life of me will it set me free give me serenity under one sun Will I wait will I sleep will I feel what I am in time

She calls me from the cold, just when I was low feeling short of stable and all that she intends, all she keeps inside, isn't on the label she says she's ashamed can she take me for a while and can I be a friend, we'll forget the past but maybe I'm not able and I break at the bend We're here and now, but will we ever be again 'cause I have found all that shimmers in this world is sure to fade away again She dreams a champagne dream strawberry surprise, pink linen on white paper lavender and cream fields of butterflies, reality escapes her she says that love is for fools who fall behind and I'm somewhere in between I never really know a killer from a savior 'til I break at the bend We're here and now, but will we ever be again 'cause I have found all that shimmers in this world is sure to fade away again It's too far away for me to hold it's too far away...guess I'll let it go

The sky was dark this morning not a bird in the trees and silence hung suspicious and anxious like a blanket covered scream And you were gone you were not there for me and I cursed the sky and begged the sun to fall all over me this life's not living, baby and living ain't free and if I can't find my way back to me let the sun fall down over me let the sun fall down All my friends are searching quiet, desperately look into their eyes you'll see the faithless crying save me, save me, save me And what are they to feel who are they to be and what am I to do with do with me, but let the sun fall over me this life's not living, baby and living ain't free and if I can't find my way back to me let the sun fall down over me let the sun fall down Until my eyes cry out 'til my head is free from doubt 'til my lungs sigh right out 'til I'm wiser Let the sun fall over me this life's not living, baby and living ain't free and if I can't find my way back to me let the sun fall down over me let the sun fall down
