Food Services
Bread and Life serves breakfast and lunch every weekday to needy New Yorkers. The Soup Kitchen serves an average of 700 nutritious meals a day, consisting of cereal, pancakes, eggs, sausage, soup, bread, meat, juice, coffee and dessert,. Meals are served between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Special holiday meals are served during Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mothers Day and Fathers Day, July 4th and other feast days.
The Mobile Soup Kitchen (MSK) is the latest addition to Bread and Life's services. It represents a unique approach to service delivery as it allows access to families who, for reasons of health or a lack of transportation, might not be able to travel to a facility such as ours. The MSK serves nutritious hot meals as well as provides social services to needy New Yorkers. It currently stops at St. Gabriel's Parish (located on the corner of Essex and Linwood in the East New York section of Brooklyn) weekdays from 10:30a.m. until noon.
For more information on the Mobile Soup Kitchen, contact Sr. Madeline Kavanagh at (718) 574-0058.
To ensure that young children do not go hungry and pregnant women can eat and provide nutritional meals for their children, the Mom's Food Pantry provides monthly food packages to economically disadvantaged mothers with children under the age of 15. These food packages provide a nutritious 3 day supply of food (3 meals per day) to families struggling to make ends meet. In addition, women with infant children can receive diapers, infant formula and baby food. Women enrolled in this program are also encouraged to join the Farewell to Poverty program. For more information on the Mom's Food Pantry please call Kathy Soler or Kevin Walter (718) 574-0058 ext.15.
A New York State certified staff nutritionist is available to provide individual diet counseling to clients, especially mothers with children and people with HIV/AIDS.
