Gloria evoked some controversy by speaking her mind. Estefan wrote a letter to The Herald in defense of Peggi McKinley, a Metro-Dade Film Advisory Board member ousted for voicing her support for banned Cuban musicians at a Miami Beach music conference. The Cuban-exile community has been attacking Gloria's comments ever since calling her a communist sympathizer, even though she was once their most beloved representative. Estefan later stated, "In Miami, they think I'm just 'Come on shake your body baby do that conga.' Well, I'm more than that, I'm not the best singer in the world. I'm a communicator."
When the Pope was to visit Cuba the following January for the first time, he won't be seeing Gloria sing. Gloria's husband told the Miami Herald: "We will never sing in Cuba while Fidel Castro's regime exists. The day Gloria sings in Cuba, she will do so because Cuba is free, and we trust that this will happen soon." Gloria has been asked several times to perform for the Pope while he is in Cuba. |
Gloria wrote the following songs for her children: "I' Am Here For You - Nayib's Song" for Nayib and for her daughter Emily "Along Came You" and "My Angel".
