Bandywine Springs Hotel
The hotel was the second on the Brandywine Springs property. The first was built in 1826 and was a posh resort for the rich from the South. Its major attraction was the Chalybeate spring. The spring was reported to have curative powers, as the local natives (Indians) told the white men. The first hotel burned in 1853; and connecting the three homes of Matthew Newkirk and his two daughters made the second hotel. The rooflines can be seen in the photo. Richard Crook added the third floor with the mansard roof. It was referred to as the "old" hotel during the amusement park era and was used as a rooming house for the acts that performed in the park. |
