MARRIED KATH SUTTER; Born in Zhitomer, Volhynia. When family emmigrated
to America, they travelled on the Ciity of Richmond (with children Marie,
Christian and Peter) along with others of the Sahorez congregation from
the ubno area of Volhynia. They travelled as steerage passengers. They
travelled by train from New York (arrival 7/27/1874) to the Bluffton Ohio
area z(or perhaps West Liberty Ohio. Here they stayed with other German
Russian people who had immigrated earlier. Thyey remained here only long
enough to earn money to move onward. Jacob could do carpenstry and
blacksmithing and he was a farmer, so he worked at whatever job was
available. Jacob filed his intention to become a citizen of the US on
6/7/1875 in Yankton, S. Dakota Territory. Freni and Anna wer born in 1875
and 1877 respectively.
Having found land north of Yankton in Turner County where he wished to
homestead and having very little money, Jacob and another farmer together
bought a 12' breaker plow and 2 oxen so that the could begin proving up on
their claims. On 5/15/1878 he affirmed that he was the head of a family
consisting of a wife and 5 children, that he had declared his intention to
bvecome a citizen of the US and he mad application for a homestead on the
N 1/2 of the NE 1/4 of thje NW 1/4 of Section 18 Twp. 98 R. 55 W in
Hutchinson County. Here he built a house 16' X 20'm built a stable, and
dug a well. Then he proceeded to break and cultivate the land using the
plow and oxen which he had bought with his neighbor friend. After 3 years
he was able to bbuy another oxen so that he had a team of his own.
On October 8, 1883 he received his final citizenship papers. On
8/14/1884, in making a final proof of his homestead, he swore that he was
42 years of age; that he had a wife and 7 children; that the value of his
homestead was $800; and that he had culltivated 50 acres of land for 5
seasons. His application was approved April 4, 1885 and he was issued a
patent dated Feb 8 1887 for this land. Both Jacob and his wife Katherine
(Sutter) lived on their homestead until their death.
