Since the beginning of time, flowers have voiced human emotions and feelings, as well as man's spirituality and religion and his love for nature. Flowers were associated with several superstitions including love potions and how long a person was going to live or die... Not only was the type of flower important when interpreting meanings or superstitions, but the color of the flower and the way it was presented or worn, played a major part.
Shakespeare referred to flowers in several of his plays.He mentions the rose in Romeo and Juliet, the pansy's magic, in A Midsummer-Night's Dream, peonies in King Lear, hollyhock in Macbeth, and the crown imperial, carnations and daffodils in The Winter's Tale.
Flowers have also been used for medicinally throughout the ages.
