I was fortunate to see a level of cooperation the other day which I
think worthy of comment. I saw a puppy dog suckling on a pig. This was
in a Lahu hilltribe village in Northern Thailand. The village residents
live in almost exactly the same manner in which they lived 2000 years ago.
Their houses are made of bamboo, and they grow the food they eat. The whole
village of 300+ people exists on a high level of cooperation. The pervading
atmosphere even affects the animals, so that they cooperate with each other.
The humans eat first, the dogs get the scraps, and the pigs get the spare
vegetables and peelings. The chickens eat rice left overs. The environment
is damaged very little by their presence. They used to move the village
every 7 years, to ensure that they did not exhaust the resources of any
one area. They are now having to modify their lifestyle, because they have
been made captive in the small area that they occupy, due to land ownership
rules. However they continue to cooperate with each other, and with their
neighbouring villagers, and to have a quality life. Many people would consider
that they have a low standard of living. But they might not be aware that
many of these people have travelled abroad, and have seen western culture
in operation. They have had the opportunity to live their lives with Western
comforts, but have rejected this lifestyle. Their culture has existed for
2000 years, and as such can be said to be proven to be a reasonable way
of living. Everybody is aware that the world cannot sustain the Western
culture for 2000 years, and almost everybody knows that eventually we must
move to a world of cooperation, as opposed to a world of competition.
If everyone in the world was able to witness the benefits of cooperating
in the way that the Lahus and their animals cooperate, then we would all
have a more peaceful life.
Is anybody happier Because you passed his way?
Does anyone remember That you spoke to him today?
The old year is over, And its toiling time is through;
Is there anyone to utter now A friendly word for you?
Can you say tonight in passing With the year that slipped so fast, That
you helped a single person
Of the many that you passed?
Is a single heart rejoicing Over what you did or said?
Does one whose hopes were fading Now with courage look ahead?
Did you waste the year, or lose it?
Was it well or poorly spent?
Did you leave a trail of kindness
Or a scar of discontent?

NEW YEAR'S GREETINGS!!
Today there is a New Moon -a time of new beginings.
What can we let go of that we really don't want, that
will only encumber us in the New Year? Now is the time
to regroup and ask ourselves --what do I really want in my
life?
In a time of new beginings we want to reaffirm our dreams,
open our hearts to receive new blessings and radiate love
to all. Love is the answer. Lets make 1998 a GREAT Year!!
In Love & Service - Angelique
Lead kindly light, amid the encircling gloom,
Lead thou me on.
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead thou me on.
Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me,
Lead thou me on

Hello David,
Thinking about what to write as a contribution for the January Newspaper,
my mind keeps going back to something that happened 13 1/2 years ago. It's
more a coincidenceof the kind that makes you wonder if it's really a coincidence.
It was one of those things that made me think that something 'bigger' was
going on. The Celestine Prophecy uses this kind of coincidence for initiating
the development of personal awareness, leading to a higher level of existence.
That what happened 13 1/2 years ago, could be seen in that context.
In the summer of 1984 I spent about five weeks on Sicily. I had been
there each summer since 1981, it was the first place I discovered where
I felt more 'home' than anywhere else. I had some good friends over there,
and we spent the time having fun on the beach, jamming in Palermo and having
very fertile conversations.
The night before the day of my departure we had a big 'farewell-party'.
There was lots of music, and a lot of drinks too... I got quite drunk and
the next day I had a terrible hangover. Even after a refreshing swim in
the sea I still felt very miserable and the thought of jumping on the train
for a 24 hours trip from Palermo to Milano filled me with disgust. I tried
to supress my first thought, meaning staying one more day, but after my
friends, who certainly saw how miserable I felt, proposed the same idea,
I said "Yeah, why not ?" I immediately felt a big relief and we had a nice
and quiet afternoon and evening that day.
The next day I packed my stuff, I was ready for my trip home. One of
my friends came to me with a newspaper and said "Look, they bombed your
train!"
I took the newspaper and read that terrorists had blown up the
Palermo-Milano train in a tunnel between Florence and Bologna, killing
many people.
First I felt insecure, thinking about the possibility that they would
blow up today's train too. But my fear vanished somehow. I took the train,
arrived safely in Milano and another 20 hours later I was back home in
Holland.
Later I told this story to people as "How a hangover saved my life".
Kind regards,
Maarten
CONFIDENTIAL REPORT HIGHLIGHTS MASSIVE STOCKPILING OF PLUTONIUM
Greenpeace reveals nuclear industry reprocessing plans for 1998
Amsterdam, 16 January 1998 --- Greenpeace today released a
confidential report obtained by nuclear industry sources,
presenting the actual figures for spent fuel and plutonium to be
reprocessed in 1998. According to the document, a total of
14,126.55 kg of plutonium will be reprocessed by Cogema
(France), while 4,180.84 kg are planned to be reprocessed by
British Nuclear Fuels Limited at Sellafield (UK) during the same
period (1).
As little as 5 to 7 Kg of plutonium would be enough to produce
one nuclear weapon.
"With the information in this report, we would like to challenge
BNFL and Cogema to confirm their reprocessing plans. In the past
they have pleaded commercial confidentiality - this document
makes that excuse redundant. The figures in this report are
staggering, and highlight once again the madness of plutonium
reprocessing", said Shaun Burnie of Greenpeace.
Out of the quota to be reprocessed at La Hague, 6,953.71 kg will
be from the French utility EdF (Electricite de France), while
7,172.84 kg will belong to Swiss, German, Belgium and Japanese
utilities. By far the largest quantity of plutonium will come
from German reactors, with 4,256.01 kg reprocessed during the
year.
"From the information in this report we now know the amount of
plutonium that the client countries of BNFL and Cogema will
acquire during 1998. In the case of reprocessing at the French
plant of La Hague, Japanese utilities will have 1306.95 kg of
plutonium reprocessed during this year. This is despite the fact
that there is no commercial demand for plutonium in Japan at
this time", added Burnie.
Greenpeace believes this is the first time that the amount of
spent fuel and plutonium to be reprocessed has been made
available to the public, and will allow those opposed to
reprocessing to have a better insight into the operations of the
secretive plutonium industry.

Note:
(1) Since the report was drafted in 1995, THORP has continued to
experience delays in its operation. Therefore there is a
possibility that less plutonium will be reprocessed during 1998.
The Thai-Burmese Yadana pipeleine project.
I have received a letter from a group of people who are opposed to
this project, and although it is relevant to Thailand, I feel that the
world should know about it. Please forward to environmental group which
you know about.
Please Help !
A plea to help save conservationist’s lives
in the case against the Yadana gas pipeline
The controversial Yadana gas pipeline project has caused much
suffering
to both the Thais and Burmese minorities along the border, as well
as
rendered much destruction to the bountiful forested area. The
construction of this 649 kilometers long to bring natural gas from
the
Moutaban Bay, off-shore of Burma , has been almost completed both of
the
sections in Burma and Thailand. However, due to opposition of
environmental groups and human rights groups in Thailand, as well as
from international organizations, the construction of the section that
will destroy a large part of a National Park in Thailand to pave a
road
of 8.4 Kms with 20 meters wide has been delayed since last 21 Dec.,
when
50 activists and locals camped out there to guard the forest.
The conservation groups asked the government and the Petroleum
Authority of Thailand to review the projects for both the environmental
and human rights reasons.
First, researches have confirmed that the forest is so important to
the
surrounding environment. Many rare animals have been found living in
the
area including wild elephants, smallest bats, and a special kind of
crab. Second, the project has been known to involve gross human rights
abuse by the SLORC against the minorities living along the pipeline
route, who have been forced to be labour in the project. Moreover,
the
pipeline was intentionally routed to pass to through strongholds of
the
minorities as the Burmese troops expected that the Thai officials will
help them in the ethnic cleansing operation since the project is a
joint
venture between the Thai and Burmese authorities. Most importantly,
the
huge revenue from selling natural gas from the biggest sources ever
found in Burma, will eventually be used to buy arms to strengthen
SLORC’s armies which have categorically prevented democracy from
taking
place in Burma.
It was reported today (21 Jan.98) that the delay of the construction
of
the pipeline in Thailand caused by the blockade of the conservationists
has prompted the officers to "hire" and mobilize villagers from the
area
and elsewhere to confront with the campers. Once violence breaks out,
some 200 security officers deployed in the area can justifiably
intervened and arrested the campers. Moreover, it was reported that
they
are masterminding the kidnap of two prominent leaders of the opposition
group, namely, Ms. Bhinand Jotiroseranee, and Mr. Pibhop Dhongchai.
Several years ago a Thai worker union’s leader, Mr. Thanong Bo-arn,
disappeared under the time the country was ruled over by a military
regime. Sources confirmed that he was killed by the officials to
suppress the worker movements.
The picture shows the PTT worker was prevented from cutting down
the
tree along the pipeline route by an activist who was determined to
sacrifice her life for the protection of the forest. The event took
place last Saturday (17 Jan. 1996).

The Infinite Dollar
Many people may not have realised it, but their subconscious mind controls
their conscious mind.
Therefore all the work that they do on their conscious mind is of no
long term benefit, unless they have some degree of control over the unconscious
mind.
One of the main difficulties in controlling the subconscious mind (sub-mind), is to be able to recognise the driving forces.
The driving forces can be divided in to 2 groups, being DESIRE and WILL.
Our lives are a permanent seesaw between these two, and if we can learn to keep the seesaw in balance, we can have a wonderfully fulfilling life.
So, to start, we probably feel that we have some control over our will,
but would like more.
There we have the first desire.
At this point I would like to introduce the terms male and female.
These relate to the two poles of electricity, neither of which can
exist without the other.
We will refer to Desire as the female strengths, and Will as the male
strengths.
Will, the male, has great force when focused on a specific subject.
But without the female element, Desire, the Will has no meaning and therefore
cannot focus.
The Will needs input from Desire, a demand for satisfaction. Then the
Will can focus on this demand and set about the task of providing satisfaction.
It really is as simple as that - or is it.
In an ideal world, it is that simple. But in this world, there is a
problem. Desire is constantly bombarded with new ideas, and as a result,
constantly produces new desires. These are passed to Will to satisfy, each
new idea arriving before the previous one has had time to be satisfied.
What we have to do is two things.
We have to train Desire to not be so demanding of variety, but more
demanding of satisfaction.
We have to train the Will to remind Desire of her needs, and to protect
her from unwanted influxes before we are ready.
When Desire is constantly bouncing from one idea to another, the Will does the best job it can. Over a period of time, it learns to generalise on the demands from Desire, and combine demands into groups of two or more.
For example, if Will analyses a Desire, and finds that within the desire there is a need for money, the desire may be generalised and attached to all other desires which have a need for money.
This results in Will focusing on money, and reminding desire that money
is what we are working on. Desire then responds to the control of Will,
and increases the desire for money.
We then find that both Will and Desire are now operating in unison,
both focussed on money. This is OK, but a total focus of this strength
can be to the detriment of the main purpose of life.
I think that we would all agree that we have a higher purpose in life
than to simply make money. We may not know what that purpose is, but deep
inside the ego, we know that it is not to make money alone.
The problem with todays world, if there is a problem, is that the majority
of peoples' lives are centred around making money. It may be money for
a luxury yacht, or it may simply be money to buy food, but nevertheless
it is money.
Certainly, in todays world, money is essential. So we spend our lives
in search of the infinite dollar.
When we have found enough money for us to survive, we automatically
move on to more demands for money. This becomes a habit, and we eventually
spend most of our lives in search of money, the infinite dollar.
If we were to write down now all the money we were going to spend in
the next 10 years, it would be a frightening amount. And so it should be.
We should be frightened about how much time we spend making money, and
how little time we think about spending it wisely.
This is where we often tend to get things wrong. We base our thinking
on the fact that our priority in life is to make money. A couple of months
living with aboriginal people who have no money would be a rapid learning
experience for most people.
We have living proof of the need for money. The aboriginal people of many countries are known to have survived for over 2000 years without money, and some still do today. So we know that the race can survive without money.
If we are able to limit our demands on money to simply food and basic
shelter, then we are able to release much of the time which we spend earning
money. This now gives us time to do some of the things in life which are
much more pleasant and satisfying than simply earning money. We now have
time for ourselves and others. We have time to reflect on what we are doing
every day. We have time to learn from some of the most advanced people
on this planet. And we dont need a pile of money to do it.
