I guess it wasn't clear to us that the place was gonna be leveled. We'd simply heard that some neighbors wanted permission to remove some scrap wood/ lumber from the house. Seemed fair enough... Dad granted permission (as the executor of the estate).

But the next time we went up there, this ( left) is what we saw! Nothing standing but the chimney...

There had been two fireplaces, one on  each side of this chimney (see floor plans).

In fact, there also was a second chimney for the coal-burning stove (see
floor plans).

The basement had been very small, and was already filled in by this time. Well heck, it was
already grown over with
weeds!

 

 

If that wasn't sad enough, the NEXT time we saw it, even the chimney was gone! End of an era...
