Died as a result of a heart attack while on duty.
Asst. Chief Ernest Wilkie - Battalion 2
1/20/1970
Died of smoke inhalation while fighting a house fire on Green St.
PSO Gary Fletcher - Engine Co. 3
2/14/1978
Died from injures he suffered while fighting a house fire on Rowena Ave.

The Honor guard was founded by Battalion Chief B. Yeargan and led by Battalion Chief T. Hayes
The Honor Guard does a great service for the Durham Fire Department and for the City of Durham.

| A FIREMAN'S PRAYER
When I am called to duty, God
Wherever flames may rage
Give me the strength to save a life
Whatever be its age
Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me
To guard my every neighbor
And protect their property
And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
Please bless with your protecting hand
My children and my wife.
