In 1890 Fire Station 1 opened on Mangum St. That station stood until 1924 when the Department built a new Station 1 on the same site and served the City of Durham until 1964. The current Station 1 opened at 139 E. Morgan St. in 1964. Station 1 is the largest of the 16 fire stations in the Durham Fire Department. Engine Co.1, Squad Co.1, Mobile Support 1, Battalion 1, and a Safety Officer respond from Station 1. Station 1 responds to several high rises buildings along with several commercial structures. This includes many large tobacco warehouses that have been turned into condos, stores and offices. Station 1 is first due to the AAA Baseball Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Station 1 units also respond to parts of North Carolina Central University and Duke University campuses. Station 1 covers a variety of residential structures, from housing projects to four thousand square foot homes. Station 1 personnel also respond to parts of the Durham Freeway and Interstate 85. The units that respond from Station 1 have historically been the busiest units in the Durham Fire Department.
