The Definitive Key Club Glossary

Advocacy - "giving a voice to those who have none." This project asks Key Clubbers to participate in letter writing campaigns, petitions, lobbying by phone, etc.

Builder's Club - Another branch of the K-Family. Unlike the other branches in which we are dependent on them, the Builder's Club is dependent on us for support. They are the middle school/junior high version of our club.

"Caring... Our Way of Life" - the Key Club Motto

Circle-K - The collegiate version of Key Club. They have divisionals, projects, and both district and international conventions. (Alternative - Gas Station Conveinence Store)

Distinguished Key Clubber (DKC) - Each year the Distinguished Key Clubber committee reveals a set of criteria which, if fulfilled, gives the individual recognition on the district level for making a special accomplishment. Distinguished members receive a pin, a certificate, and are honored at District Convention

District Level - There are 31 districts in Key Club International. We belong to the New York District of Key Club. Districts exist to maintain and expand Key Club service within that area. District officers include a Treasurer, Secretary, and Governor who are elected at convention in February or March.

District Convention - One of the top rewards of Key Club. It is a weekend full of sports, workshops, dances, and lots of Key Club spirit. It is usually held at Kutsher's Country Club in Monticello, NY. The next year's District Officers are elected. Each Key Club is limited to the number of members it can take.

District Project - The fundraising aspect of Key Club. Every year the District Board decides upon a goal for the district to raise among ten charities.

Division - The level of Key Club below the District and above the club. There are 26 divisions in the New York District each of which is led by a Lieutenant Governor who is elected before convention in the spring. West Hempstead is in the Long Island South Central West Division (LISCW). Island Park is in the Long Island South West Division (LISW).

Divisional - A monthly meeting of all of the clubs in a division.

DKC - Distinguished Key Clubber How can I become a DKC?

DP - District Project

Dues - Like any worthwhile undertaking, Key Club costs money. In order to defray the cost, both International and District Key Clubs charge dues.

Empire Key - The official publication of the NYD Key Club includes dates, photos, and summaries of projects done by clubs all over New York.

GP - Governor's Project

Governor's Project - Unites members of the NYD Key Club under one common theme of caring and service.

Happy Quarters or Happy Change - Done at the end of divisionals and Kiwanis meetings. Giving charity and saying something like "Happy Birthday" to a friend or giving kudos to someone for a job well done.

How Do You Feel? - A Key Club cheer that is asked to members and clubs. The response is, "I feel good! On I feel so good! UH!"

IDD - Iodine Deficiency Disorder

Iodine Deficiency Disorder - The worldwide service project. Affects people who don't get iodine in their diets. Affects over 1.2 billion people. It only takes $.05 to cure one person. That means $60,000 would cure all affected.

Interclub - Any project in which other Key Clubs are involved. Example: Singled Out, Volleyball interclub, etc.

International Level - International Board consists of 14 trustees, a secretary, and the president. They develop the Major Theme and Emphasis Program. The Board is elected at the International Convention in July.

International Convention - A larger version of the District Convention. It is held in a different city every year.

Kamp Kiwanis - A summer camp set up by Kiwanis. Money raised for this charity sends needy kids to camp during the summer.

KC - Key Club

Key Club - The KEY in Key Club stands for Kiwanis Educating Youth.

Keynoter - The official publication of Key Club International. Provides summaries and photos from Key Clubs all over the world.

Key Club Pledge - I pledge on my honor to uphold the objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school, and community; to serve my nation, God, and combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.

K-Family Relations (K-Relations) - An important part of Key Club is the support of our sponsoring Kiwanis Club, the West Hempstead Kiwanis Club, and Circle K. K-Relations is Key Clubbers attending Builder's Club, Circle K, or Kiwanis events and/or meetings and vice versa.

Kiwanis - The parent organization of Key Club. Kiwanis is a Native American term meaning "let's get together" and that's what they do: "get together" and volunteer.

Local Club Level - The most important level of Key Club. Our club and every club like it are the driving forces of Key Club. Without the club level, there could be no other levels of Key Club.

Major Theme and Emphasis Program - This theme is delegated by Key Club International. The goal of the theme is to directly focus on indeserved children through partners with volunteer service and community organizations, for example the RTA or Special Olympics.
