Roger Delaney began at Port Adelaide as a second string full forward and ended his career as one of the best full backs in the club's history.
Delaney played one game as a forward for Port Adelaide in 1984 but had to bide his time in the reserves while Tim Evans continued his stranglehold on the key forward position. By 1986 he was back in the senior side as a defender and quickly became renowned as the best full back in Australia outside the VFL.
Delaney was drafted by Fitzroy but injured his knee in the opening minutes of the 1990 season AFL season and did not play another senior game for Fitzroy. He returned to Alberton in 1991 to continue to make life hard for opposing full forwards and only age stopped him from making the inaugural Power side.
