Matthew Primus'ascension to the mantle of the leading ruckman in the country has not been without its setbacks. Primus began his career with the Geelong juniors, playing in the shadow of the grandstand named after his grandfather Reg Hickey at Kardinia Park but following his surprise delisting from the Cats, crossed the border to play with Norwood.

His performances with Norwood were enough to catch the eye of Fitzroy who lured him back to Victoria in time for Primus to play in their final season before the Lions' demise at the end of 1996. Tied to Brisbane thanks to the curious Brisbane/Fitzroy merger, Primus sought a trade to Port Adelaide, then newly established in the AFL. Primus's dominating role in the centre for Port quickly established him as the leading ruckman in the competition and, aside from a setback due to a severe knee injury in 1999, Primus has proven to be a player of unsurpassed skill and determination.

Port Adelaide has acknowleged Primus' key role in the club's emergence as one of the most feared sides in the AFL by raising him to the captaincy in 2001 and awarding him the Best & Fairest in 2002.
