The heart of the game is the Stadium Battles, which feature a simple control layout with which anyone familiar with the portable games will feel right at home.

Available as both single-player and multiplayer games, the Stadium Battles are fast-paced 3D versions of the battles in the Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow Game Boy games. Unlike in the Game Boy battles, you only choose a team of three Pokémon for a fight, except for Tag Team battles; you are unable to use items to recover health or statues; and you don't have the option to switch your Pokémon immediately after they KO an opponent.

The battles themselves are bright, colorful, and well animated; each Pokémon makes a smooth transition to 3D. The bulk of the polygons are distributed to the character models and special effects, so the game offers some sweet N64 visuals. The attacks, such as Thunder and Psy-beam, display an effective array of graphical effects and color.
One very nice touch is the way the camera changes angles when an attack is used repeatedly rather than showing the animation from the same static perspective.
