JAY MERACLE LONGLEY |
Jay Longley was a farmer for about seven years and then became a buttermaker. For many years he worked in creameries in the Dousman, Ottawa Township, Waukesha County, and Sullivan areas. At one time he worked in the same creamery where his grandfather, Jacob Meracle, delivered mail. Soon after moving to the Village of Sullivan, he became custodian of the Village Hall and continued in that work until his death. He was a loyal member of the Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department. Jay and Jessie settled permanently in the Village of Sullivan shortly before the birth of their last child in 1912. Fifty-six years of married life was theirs to enjoy. On April 30, 1941 they celebrated their 5oth wedding anniversary. Jay died of a heart attack January 7, 1947. Burial was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
The following resolutions of sympathy, a much treasured tribute to a beloved husband and father, were written to his wife and children after his death:
"In as much as it has pleased Almighty God to summon from our midst the soul of Jay M. Longley, devoted member of the Sullivan Fire Department; be it hereby resolved that the Sullivan Fire Department extend to his wife and children their deepest and most heartfelt sympathy. A member such as Jay was a credit to the organization. The absence of his gay wit and pleasant personality, will be deeply felt by all. It is further resolved that a copy of this letter be spread upon the minutes of our organization that it may perpetuate the memory of him among us. It is the sincere wish of the undersigned committee and all members of the Sullivan Fire Department that the pleasant memories of your life with your husband and father remain with you and provide solace in this your hour of grief."
