Carl Henry Longley

The fourth son of Jay and Jessie Longley spent his childhood in the Hardscrabble area of the Town of Sullivan, Jefferson County, Wisconsin and most of his adult life in the Village of Sullivan. In 1927 he became an employee of the Standard Oil Company of Indiana and as their Agent-Distributor delivered products to service stations, farms and homes. He continued in that employment until he retired in 1960 after thirty-three years with the company. He never lost interest in the petroleum industry which played an important part in his life.

From the days of sandlot baseball and cow pasture baseball parks he took an avid interest in sports. For many years he was the catcher for the Sullivan baseball team. Later he attended team games and professional games in Milwaukee and always listened to games broadcast on the radio.

Carl was active in civic, church, school and fraternal affairs. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at Jefferson; served several terms on the Joint District School District Number. 4; a member of the Sullivan Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chief for 25 years; a member of Dousman Lodge Number 315 F. & A. M.; a member and Past Patron of Dousman Chapter 257, Order of Eastern Star; a member of the Class of 1934, Consistory of the Valley in Milwaukee, and a member of the Zor Shrine in Madison, Wisconsin.

In 1981 he suffered a stroke and in 1985 he was moved to a nursing home in Iola, Wisconsin where he spent his remaining years. He died there at age ninety-four and was buried in the Summit Cemetery, Waukesha County, Wisconsin.

Louise Baneck Longley

ABOUT LOUISE BANECK

The youngest daughter of Albert and Clara (Friesch) Baneck was born December 12, 1903 in the Town of Concord, Jefferson County, Wisconsin and grew to adulthood there. She attended high school in Jefferson, Wisconsin and worked at Whitewater, Wisconsin until her marriage to Carl in 1928.

Louise was a member of St, Mark’s Lutheran Church, Dousman Chapter of Lodge No. 257, Order of Eastern Star, Madison Chapter Daughters of the Nile, Dousman-Ottawa and Iola Garden Clubs, and a volunteer with the American Red Cross. She was interested in many other worthwhile projects. Her writing was wonderful and the stories about her childhood leave a legacy for generations to come. She too lived to be ninety-four years of age. She died at Iola, Wisconisn and is buried next to Carl in the Summit Cemetery.

Once again I reflect on my being here. As John Longley was captured and returned from captivity with the Indians, Louise’s great grandfather suffered a similar situation. He was a soldier forced to fight for the French in Napoleon’s Army In the family Bible he wrote the following:
"I, Conrad Friesch, wrote this down. I took part in the Russian Campaign 1812, came as far as Moscow, was captured by the Russians and held prisoner for 9 months. We started out 16,000 and only 350 men came home again."
