Epilogue

EPILOGUE

The Longleys are a strong proud family. Each has lived life in lieu of the motto on the family Coat of Arms, "Esse Quam Videri" - to be and not to seem. This brings to mind a few lines written by L. G. Pine:

"We cannot alter the texture of our ancestry, and whatever our ancestors were like, we can be sure that they resembled us or we resemble them, and even if their characteristics are not reproduced in us, we may reflect that they are probably lying dormant and will come to light in our children or grandchildren."

THE FAMILY

The family is like a book...
The children are the leaves;
The parents are the cover, that
Protective beauty gives.

At first the pages of the book
Are blank and purely fair;
But time soon writes memories,
And paints pictures there.

Love is the little golden clasp
That bindeth up the trust;
Oh, break it not lest all the leaves
Shall scatter and be lost!

PRECIOUS MEMORIES

Precious mem'ries, how they linger
How they ever flood my soul
In the stillness of the midnight
Precious, sacred scenes unfold.

Precious mem'ries, unseen angels
Sent from somewhere to my soul
How they linger, ever near me
And the sacred past unfold.

Precious mem'ries, how they linger
How they ever flood my soul
In the stillness of the midnight
Precious, sacred scenes unfold.

Precious father, loving mother
Fly across the lonely years
And old home scenes of my childhood
In fond memory appear.

In the stillness of the midnight
Echoes from the past I hear
Old-time singing, gladness bringing
From that lovely land somewhere.

I remember mother praying
Father, too, on bended knee
Sun is sinking, shadows falling
But their pray'rs still follow me.

As I travel on life's pathway
Know not what the years may hold
As I ponder, hope grows fonder
Precious mem'ries flood my soul.

LOOK TO THIS DAY

Yesterday is but a dream...
And tomorrow is only a vision...
But today, well-lived, makes every
Yesterday a dream of happiness...
And every tomorrow a vision of hope...
Look well, therefore, to this day.
