Today was the Interstate 40 exploration day. We started with the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park. Both were really cool to see...but took a lot longer than we had anticipated. Additionally, once you are in the park, you can either leave the way you came or go one direction through the full park. After being in the park so long, we had to buy some petrified wood. Needless to say, we did indeed spend money on "rocks"...and we have many pictures from the desert and park!

After the rock buying expedition, we journeyed to the Meteor Crater. That was interesting to see and learn more about...however, it was also $10 per person. It was worth seeing, but I don't think that we will be back there anytime soon.

Somewhere in this time period, Jen saw an elk off the side of the road. Rob also saw it but Kate and John did not. Therefore, Kate has been on a mission to see an elk ever since.

Next we were on our way to Slide Rocks State Park which has a natural waterslide through the rocks. However, due to our late start, we did not get to the park until 6:30 p.m. and it closes at 7 p.m. Therefore, we changed into our bathing suits and pretty much ran to the waterslide. So...the park is in a state forest and was not very warm. Therefore, when Jen and Kate jumped into the water, they thought they were going to freeze to death. BUT...it had to be done since we drove all the way there. When we got out of the water, the air didn't feel as cold...either that or we were numb.

We left the park and drove through Sedona to reach a major highway to start towards the Grand Canyon. We finally arrived at the campground in the canyon and saw a coyote as we were searching for our campsite. Additionally, there were mountain lion warnings posted in numerous places. We did not see any of those though.
