November 23, 2006 - Thursday - Happy Birthday Fumihiko

Sunny and clear, nice day.

Okay, before I get to my day, something cool that I have to talk about as the movie fanatic that I am...They are filming a movie in Tsuruoka. It's nothing too unusual, there have a been a few movies filmed near here in the last few years...for example Tasagare Seibei (Twilight Samurai) and Semi-Shigure. Takeshi Miiake is now filming a movie called Sukiyaki Western Django in English near Tsuruoka. Anyway, according to the BBC News website (Link may fail after a while), Quentin Tarantino is going to be asked to do a cameo in the film. So, what's cool is that if he does it, Tarantino might come to my town. Of course, chances are that he'll get to do his cameo in Tokyo or Osaka, but still. Way cool huh? One of my friends has met some of the actors in the film when they came to her restaurant, I wonder if she could introduce me to Quentin! I'll have to ask her this weekend.

Okay, on with my day. This morning we went to bed very late, and got up quite late too. We had a good morning together. I showered and then gave Fumihiko his presents. He got some chocolate, two Airport movies (77 and 79) and the picture book of Jumanji by Chris van Allsburg. He's Fumihiko's favourite writer/illustrater. He was really surprised and happy.

We went out for lunch to Birth & Day, the new restaurant, and we had the dish that the other person had earlier this week. I had chicken, Fumihiko had hamburg. It was nice and we had a good meal.

We drove to karaoke after that. We stopped at a grocery store on the way and picked up some things, then went to the karaoke box. Free time was more expensive than a set time today (national holiday) so we went for 3 hours. A great time was had. We had drink bar and sang our hearts out. I did most of my favourites, plus the Rocky Horror songs and a few oldies. That was fun. The total cost for that was only 1200 yen. Not bad at all. I paid happily.

We looked at an electronics store for a while, then headed over to Togashi's for dinner. It was full, so they told us they'd call us in 25 to 30 minutes and we could come back. We went off to the nearby electronics store and looked around there too. They were more expensive! We got the call and headed back to the restaurant.

We had a really nice meal. It's a yakiniku restaurant. Their meat is really good quality and wasn't too expensive tonight. We ordered one mixed set dish, and Fumihiko had one extra dish. I was full when we left.

We came home via the grocery store and made coffee. Then, we watched Airport 77. It was fun in a very 70's way. It was interesting to "star" watch though. Airport 77 is the one where the aeroplane goes under the ocean. It starred Jack Lemon, George Kennedy, James Stewart, Christopher Lee, Brenda Vaccaro and Olivia de Havilland. We both enjoyed it quite honestly.

And that was that. We've basically been vegging or doing computer stuff for the rest of the night. I hope we'll got to bed soon as I do have to teach tomorrow night.

Fumihiko had a great birthday though, and that's what really mattered, isn't it? Night night.
