Harry Potter
To paraphrase the book and the movie, I think we must expect great things from you, Harry Potter fanfiction writers. I find myself reading all different kinds of pairings in this fandom, so be prepared for some eccentricities. My only complaint is that too many HP writers post their work in parts -- meaning too many works-in-progress to keep up with. I'll try to avoid recommending those, unless the story is utterly outstanding.

Link Broken! Compelling the Heart
by Auror Borealis
Adult. Snape/Hermione. During their 7th year, a Slytherin prank involving a love potion leaves Hermione pining for Snape. But when a cure is six weeks away, will the teacher and student learn to cope? Although it's not very realistic, this story is well-written and entertaining. 76K
Like Shadows on a Winter Sky by Resmiranda Gen (for now). Snape/Hermione. For those of you that like some fiction with your angst, Resmiranda's cooked up a great one. Voldemort punishes the spy in his midst by permanently blinding Snape. Too far gone to be cured by magic, the depressed Snape is barely able to function at all, withdrawing from society altogether. That is until Head Girl Hermione Granger stumbles onto his condition and introduces him to some helpful Muggle ways for aiding the visually impaired. Don't get me wrong, kids, this story packs a hell of an emotional wallop. Novel length.
A Matter of Honor
by Amy McWilliams (McAmy) Adult. Snape/Hermione. McAmy writes these two characters like she knows them personally. In her 7th year, Hermione takes on a honor's project that sets her path for the years to come. As Hermione grows as a person -- through college and into a teaching career at Hogwarts, her relationship with Snape also changes over time. Realistic and poignant, this story will get you where you live. Novel length and oh so worth the read.
Link Fixed! The Fourth Unforgivable
by Rhosymedre Adult. Snape/Hermione. Okay, it's a PWP chestnut -- Character A must have sex of suffer horrible consequences, so Character B graciously obliges. Still, this is a hot little story if you're in the mood for some fast fanfiction action. 44K

Harry Potter - Slash

The Nature of Instinct by
Keelywolfe
Slash. Set after the (disastrous) end of the 4th book,
Dumbledore sends Sirius Black to warn old friends of the coming danger, one of
whom is Remus Lupin. Keelywolfe’s take on the characters is excellent. 23k
The Mirror Never
Lies by Rhysenn Slash. This is a beautiful first time story, well
worth the read. Harry and Ron make some interesting discoveries thanks to the
Mirror of Erised. 68k Warning: This is underage fic, for those squismish about
such things.
The Mirror of Maybe by Midnight Blue Slash (non-graphic, so far). Snape/Harry. At the end of his 5th year, Harry is accidentally 'Jumanjied' into a Magical Mirror. Unable to cope with 13 years worth of new memories and magical abilities once back in his 16 year old body, Harry uses his new skills to hide in plain sight -- as Hogwarts' newest DADA instructor, the War Mage Ash. I just can't give this story enough praise -- and it's not even finished yet! What honestly amazes me the most is that no matter what new aspects she adds to his skills, she never once loses the true essence of Harry's character. Already 500K+
Civil War Series by Sushi Slash. Snape/Harry. With the final battle with Voldemort fast approaching, an uncertain 17 year-old Harry instinctively turns to the one person who will understand -- even if that person is his detested Potions Master. There is a healthy does of realism in the rest of the series as the other major characters and the wizarding world in general react to the much frowned-upon relationship. 100K+
Too Wise to Woo Peacefully
by JayKay Slash. Snape/Harry. Life at Hogwarts gets a little more interesting when the school decides to put on a production of the Bard's 'Much Ado About Nothing'. Keeping the performance in true classical style, all the parts are to be played by men. What will happen when Harry is casted to play Beatrice to Snape's Benedick? (What do you think? It's a slash story, after all ;-) Check out the sequel while you're at it. 297K
Halloween by Minx Slash. Snape/Harry. When Harry runs into one of his former professors at an oddly-themed costume party, the last thing he expects happens. While there isn't a lot of obvious plot to this story, the way Minx captures the emotions and motivations of the characters just grabs you and won't let go -- especially the ending. 69K
Someday Out of the Blue
by Lady Feylene Slash. Snape/Lupin. There could be a lot of backstory between Severus and Remus, and Lady Feylene does an excellent job in telling the tale. Switching back and forth between present and past, this story is an in-depth look at the relationship between the characters then and now. 259K
The Skull Beneath the Skin
by Ellen Fremedon Slash. Snape/Lupin. It's not easy to put aside twenty years of mistrust, but Remus and Severus make the attempt. Although written for the VirginSnape! challenge, you can almost pinpoint the exact moment the author shifts the emphasis from deflowering the virgin to the need for comfort and understanding. The real strength here is in the story's simplicity. Nicely written. 70K
Wicked Game Series
by JayKay Slash. Snape/Lupin. Beginning with the introduction of Lupin in PoA, JayKay expertly weaves a S/L backstory into the book canon. For something a little different, the second part of the story covers the events of 'Goblet of Fire' as a series of letters between Severus and Remus. However, it is the last chapter that is truly JayKay's masterpiece -- filled with all the tension, awkwardness and heart-melting moments that will convince even the most skeptical reader that these two characters could really belong together. 530K
Resolution by Frances Potter Slash. Harry/Draco. Frances is one of those writers who is so good, she makes the rest of us feel unworthy. Resolution is one of the best H/D stories on the web. Set in Harry's last six months at Hogwarts, this is actually a set of vignettes that begins when Harry and Draco are snowed in together during a blizzard. Although still in progress, there is enough story posted to make you want to beg for more. 200K+ Additional NC-17 ficlets from this story are also available on the PSA Archive, but it is password-protected. Beyond the Barriers by Ria Slash. I'm always fascinated by future fic in this fandom, especially stories that deal with the complex relationship between Harry and Draco. This story is more like an interlude, with no real set up or ending -- just two people in need of each other in a moment in time, no matter what is in their past or awaits in their future. 57K
Hush by gothangelic Slash. I had to think twice before including this story here. I love the first 3/4's of the story, in which a critically injured Draco unwittingly turns to Harry after a fight with Voldemort. Deaf and partially blind, Draco finds comfort and acceptance with his former enemies. My hesitation over this story comes from a scene towards the end that seems to be a much too convenient plot device. Still, it's well worth the read. This story contains unconsented incest and rape. 300K This story is also available on the PSA Archive, but it is password-protected. For password information, please follow this link.
Slowly, But Exceeding Fine by Ellen Fremedon Slash. They say that war makes for strange bedfellows. That old saying is true when, with the fight with Voldemort rapidly upon them, Sirius Black and Severus Snape use each other to relieve some stress and tension. But as time wears on, will they find that there is more to their relationship than either of them originally thought, especially when Snape find himself the victim of an addiction? I love the storyline in this one, especially Ellen's original battleplans. Kudos, also, for logical and wise use of supporting characters. 163K
Unthinkable Thoughts by Aidan Lynch Slash. While having characters bonded together by their magic may be an old standard in Harry Potter fanfic, this is one story where it well and truly works. Aidan manages a deft and deep exploration of what the reactions of various characters would be, including a Harry that sinks into a deep depression and the more pragmatic reaction of Draco. A long, lovely read. +1MB
Draco Malfoy and the Heart of Slytherin by Saber ShadowKitten Non-graphic slash. Harry/Draco. I couldn't believe it when I realized I hadn't already recommended this story ages ago. It's easily my favourite HP fanfic. Never have I read such a dead-on characterization of Draco Malfoy, and the interaction between Draco and Harry is perfection itself. I don't even want to summarize -- just trust me and read what is easily one of the best fanfics on the web. 212K.
Commencement by Aja Slash. Harry/Draco. The war is over and the surviors are graduating, but two of them are adrift, each in his own way. After seven years of rivalry, will Harry and Draco finally be able to see past their mutual hostility? An excellently written and well-paced story that manages to keep both Harry and Draco solidly in character. 87K This story is password-protected. For password information, please follow this link.
Tissue of Silver by Fearless Diva Slash. Harry/Draco. Diva says (s)he is still rewriting this story, and damn, I can't wait to see the final product if a draft is this good. It's post-war, and Draco changed sides at huge risk to himself. Why, then, is he still a pariah in the Wizarding world? Why does he continue to appear as the star witness in trial after trial of his old Death Eater friends despite the death threats he begins to receive? What, then, will happen when Auror Harry Potter is assigned to protect his former foe? Beautifully plotted with an in-depth backstory that so many other fanfics don't bother to provide. The writing, too, is fantastic -- especially with Draco's letters to his Uncle Severus. Long.
Aftermath by Josan Slash. Ron/Severus. I never would have thought of this pairing -- hell, when I saw it I doubted I could believe it. Josan, however, makes it work. Living in self-imposed exile amongst the Muggles for over a decade, Severus is shocked when a near-crippled Ron Weasley is practically dropped on his doorstep by a well-meaning Muggle. I love the time Josan takes in telling this story -- how helping Ron cope with and manage disability eventually leads to Severus finding his own inner-peace. Bonus points, too, for excellent use of supporting characters, especially the other Weasleys. 283K
Little Stone Heart by Kat Reitz & tzigane Slash.Snape/Draco. To protect himself from unwanted feelings, Snape has cast most of his emotions into a piece of stone. A good plan, right? But what will happen when Draco unwittingly finds it? Three guesses, folks -- and the first two don't count. Nicely plotted and steamy sex to boot. 110K
Harry Potter and the Magic of Mistletoe by November Snowflake Non-graphic slash. Harry/Draco. A cute bit of holiday fluff in which Draco sends Harry a sprig of magical mistletoe, compelling the Boy Who Lived to snog Draco whenever they are in the same room. But what begins as a practical joke may not have the results Draco intended. 63K
Underwater Light by Maya Non-graphic Slash.Harry/Draco. It's seventh year and another Triwizard Tournament is underway. Harry is once again representing Hogwarts, but he never recovered from the events in GoF. Seriously depressed, he is about to receive the shock of his life when, during the course of the tournament, he discovers that the things he would miss the most is...Draco Malfoy. Maya works wonders in this story, developing a realistic friendship between Harry and Draco and keeping them remarkably in character. Some of the dialogue had me laughing out loud. Novel length.
Welcome to the Real World by IamtheLizardQueen Slash. Harry/Draco. The war has been over for two years, but for all that time, Draco has been kept prisioner by his own father. Escaping, Draco makes his way to the one person he hopes will save him. Okay, there are some pretty big plot holes in this one, but Lizard Queen does a nice job with the Draco-learns-to-live-in-the-Muggle-world theme, and she is taking her time developing the relationship between Harry and Draco. In progress.
Silent Friend by Titti Slash.Sirius/Draco. This is one of those stories I had to think twice before rec'ing. There are some out-of-character issues I have with it, but overall, it's a nice little fluffy piece. At Hogwarts as Snuffles, Sirius comes across a lonely Draco Malfoy. Concerned for the student, Snuffles takes to spending time with Draco. Once Sirius is cleared of the charges against him, the pair start a tentative relationship. Not realistic, but an entertaining read nonetheless. 100K
The Lodger by Mad Martha Slash. Harry/Draco. Everybody and their brother has rec'd this story, but that should only prove what a great read it actually is. In need of a housemate, Harry contacts an agency to arrange a roommate. Not surprisingly, the first applicant is Draco. What is surprising about this story is how amazingly Mad Martha develops the relationship between Harry and Draco while keeping them completely in character. Amazing. Go. Read. Now. 251K
Transfigurationsby Resonant Slash.Harry/Draco. Resonant. Res.O.Nant. Learn the name, girls and boys, and remember it well when you are looking for some of the best fanfic on the web. I don't even know where to start on the list of reasons why I adored this story. How about a totally new way to look at magic, or a war that didn't suddenly end with the death of Voldemort, or a traumatized Harry that chose exile rather than stoically rejoining the rank and file fighting the Dark, or a Harry that returns five years later at the grand reopening of a sorely less-than-perfect Hogwarts? Interested yet? No? How about if you throw in Draco, Harry and Hermione as professors, and a H/D romance that unfolds with all the beauty of an early morning sunrise. Interested now? Good. Go read! 437K
Seeing the Light by Fearless Diva Slash. Harry/Draco. If you haven't read the remarkable 'Tissue of Silver' mentioned in the last update, well, what's wrong with you? Go read now! Then come back and check out this excellent sequel. 142K
Draco in Darkness by Plumeria
Non-graphic slash. What exactly is it about fanfic that makes us want read about our favourite characters when they are as debilitated as possible? There are a number of 'blind' HP stories out there, but Plumeria's writing really makes this one stand out in the crowd. Harry cautiously befriends Draco after the Slytherin is blinded in a Quidditch accident. Long.
Je Te Plumerais and The Exaltation of the Lark by Nimori Slash. Harry/Lucius. Although this pairing is becoming more popular, there just aren't a lot of stories out there that are plausible. These two stories, though, just struck a chord with me. Imprisioned by the Dark Lord, Harry is on the edge of sanity. Will his new cellmate, Lucius, kept Harry afloat, or will Malfoy, Sr. be dragged under with the Boy-Who-Is-About-To-Lose-It. I'm not really a fan of terse, jumpy scenes in fanfic writing, but Nimori's use of the style is a masterful addition to a thought-provoking pair of stories. 35K, 18K
The Courtship of Harry Potter
by Diana Williams Slash. Snape/Harry. Borrowing from Ancient Greek culture, Diana has created a universe where young wizards are expected to take an older wizard as a mentor/lover. When a shady wizard starts showing an interest in Harry, Snape reluctantly makes an offer of his own. Deftly handled. 379K
